Hi, I have a question about category updates and other maintenance. They don't happen immediately, and some appear not to update at all, so I was wondering about the scheduling of maintenance scripts like runJobs.php, rebuildAll.php, rebuildImages.php. Css1971 (talk) 15:03, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
Category:
lists are updated when the page which is categorized gets saved. If you add[[Category:Some category]]
to a page directly and save it, theCategory:
is updated immediately. If you add a category to a template and the template is already transcluded in a page, you need to re-save the page, even with no edits (called a null edit). Some wiki farms run background jobs that go through pages to (essentially) null edit them, which updates the categories (and do some other things) automatically over time. I'm not sure ShoutWiki runs any background jobs. --Saftzie (talk) 21:59, 24 December 2016 (UTC)- Doesn't seem to be the case. For example removing all the category tags on a page, saving it, and then re-adding them doesn't cause the category list page to update, reflecting the page which was saved. fyi, this is on a wiki which was imported from an export. - Got a link? --Saftzie (talk) 22:58, 25 December 2016 (UTC)
- It appears the import built up a nice backlog of jobs - normally these would run at a faster rate then they're generated. I've run these manually for you, and that should do the trick. --Lewis Cawte (talk) 23:21, 25 December 2016 (UTC)
- Worked a treat. Many thanks for service above and beyond the call of duty based on the timestamp. Css1971 (talk) 15:23, 27 December 2016 (UTC)
