Forum:ShoutWiki is so slow
Forums: Index → Community help
Our Wiki, and appearently all of ShoutWiki is so slow that it has become unusable, let alone allow anyone to wokr on pages, what the hell is going on and is anyone doing something about it or should one look for an alternative? Some communication would be nice OMGmacros (talk) 20:20, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
- Some of the back-end servers got moved, and the cache got flushed. Some things might be slow as things get re-cached. Anything with race conditions might be unstable, but that's because race conditions are inherently unstable. --Saftzie (talk) 22:54, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
- There's absolutely an aspect of this - still plenty of thumbnails regenerating.
- Traffic is also back to normal levels (* thanks to unbreaking robots.txt and search engines indexing sites again) which means the backend server upgrade we were going to do is certainly required. On a more positive note, it means I can stop putting a quarter of my day job salary into ShoutWiki each month to keep the lights on.
- I had a week booked off work in September to do the server move, but, unfortunately, I wasn't able to take all the time off, and hence we only got the quick/easy image server done, and not the more time-consuming and seemingly now more important one. That's nearly ready to go as soon as a slot for time off comes up in the week or two.
- I hadn't really noticed the page slowness myself - having poked around a bit this evening, I've certainly noticed it intermittently, which is pretty consistent with the load trends I'm seeing. --Lewis Cawte (talk) 22:52, 1 October 2023 (UTC)
- It took just over 30 seconds to open this post to type this comment. Shoutwiki has been fantastic as a platform for my history hobby over the years, but I'm now getting a lot of feedback from users that it is too slow to use (not only from those who want instant gratification). I'm now considering alternatives, would having SW host an ad-free site be quicker? (I can afford low costs) or what about migrating the whole thing. I manage another history site on Miraheze which is quicker, but plagued by spam. Hooligan (talk) 21:10, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
I'm now seriously looking at moving to another provider. If anyone knows of someone who can migrate me, please let me know and I am quite happy to pay a reasonable price. Since I retired with a disabilty some years ago my wiki site has been a major part of my life, but recently I'm simply being told, by the schools and tourist organisations who used to use it, that "my" site, which has involved years of work, is just too slow.
