Dealing with the kayak spam[edit source]

Just add their blog to the spam blacklist. AOTCP69zhere (talk) 02:56, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

Maintaining the spam blacklist is something staff has to do. But regular users can still nominate individual articles for speedy deletion. --Saftzie (talk) 04:17, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

Delete a page on Encyclopedia Griffin[edit source]

Can you delete All I Really Want For Christmas please? Because it has nothing to do with Encyclopedia Griffin. --67.218.18.234 (talk) 23:28, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

I'm not an administrator on s:w:family-guy. In fact, it looks like s:w:family-guy:User:HoJu and s:w:family-guy:User:HoJu24, which are probably the same person, is the only administrator there, but hasn't edited since October last year (to undo your page blanking and block you). --Saftzie (talk) 23:55, 26 July 2016 (UTC)

Planning to make a private wiki for a community - having some start-up questions[edit source]

  • I can't seem to find good information about making a back-up of a wiki
  • Is there a maximum of the total size of the wiki?
  • Is Shoutwiki a stable enough platform to start a future proof wiki?
We are planning to make this our primary knowledge platform so we need to be sure Shoutwiki is the place to be.
  • I see that your income comes from advertisements but I can't find anything about Adblockers. Do you have a policy?

I hope you can help me with these questions. Noorderling (talk) 09:21, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

Let me preface my response by saying I'm an admin of the Hub wiki, but not a member of ShoutWiki staff. Staff may have more definitive answers or a different perspective on some questions.
  1. Backup and restore by administrators are usually done through the Special:Export and Special:Import pages on their wiki. ShoutWiki staff also run regular backups, so admins doing their own exports shouldn't be necessary. If you want to do a full import, it's better to contact staff through Special:Contact and let them help you rather than doing it on your own through Special:Import. In the File namespace, Export and Import do not save or restore media, just the pages themselves.
  2. There is currently no maximum size imposed on any wiki.
  3. Some wiki farms come and go. ShoutWiki has been around since 2009. I don't think it's going away any time soon. There are occasional downtimes, unfortunately usually unannounced, but they don't last long.
  4. There are no official policies about ad blockers. Income from ads supports the infrastructure. All personnel are volunteer. In the past, ShoutWiki had free wikis and paid wikis. If ad revenue drops enough, I suppose paid wikis might have to come back. I'm not privy to any financial details, but paid wikis seem highly unlikely at the moment. Personally, I'd say that what you do with your browser is up to you. I know that some staff are currently reviewing what ads to keep and what to discard, because some can be annoying, which makes them ineffective, too.
HTH. --Saftzie (talk) 05:13, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for your answers. This helps a lot! Noorderling (talk) 06:31, 8 November 2016 (UTC)

Green Day Wiki monobook.css[edit source]

Hi there, I think you're an active staff member here, so I'll tell you about some assistance I need: I started Green Day Wiki yesterday and imported it from Wikia, due to how Wikia is a plain mess. The wiki I imported was in desperate need of cleanup as well, and there's no active community. The pages there are almost only lyric pages. Besides, it's CC-BY-SA license.

The reason I'm bringing this up is because I have a bit of problems with the monobook.css: if you edit any page, the sidebar and username bar will shrink, which is irritating. Also, I am not good at template design and have been struggling with designing templates like Template:infobox album there. Lastly, there are a lot of user pages that have been imported and that I want deleted (except for the user Luigim1--he's an editor on the ShoutWiki version.

I would greatly appreciate help, thanks. Castaway2000 (talk) 22:56, 19 November 2016 (UTC)

Also, what i mean about the sidebar and user info resizing, I mean this. What causes this issue? Castaway2000 (talk) 05:38, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
You have broken HTML somewhere, possibly many places. At the very least, it's broken in s:w:greenday:MediaWiki:Edittools. You have an unbalanced <div>. Check for other tags, too. There may be more. --Saftzie (talk) 16:16, 20 November 2016 (UTC)
Thank you. I'll let you know if I have any other problems with Green Day Wiki. Castaway2000 (talk) 18:18, 20 November 2016 (UTC)

Please stop deleting people's talkpages[edit source]

Thanks. Isarra (talk) 21:30, 10 December 2016 (UTC)

The criteria that make them candidates for deletion are that they are created by not the user with only an editcountitis so-called "welcome" message with no additional talk. Furthermore, their userspace contains no subpages. There's no actual talk being deleted. That makes them spam-ish. --Saftzie (talk) 23:42, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
A talk page with a welcome on it is a talk page by definition, and you of all people should not be making claims about a user having 'editcountitis' when you are going around doing exactly the same thing in reverse for no good reason. Stop it. You are confusing and irritating users and we have received multiple complaints from users who have been pinged by your destructive actions. Isarra (talk) 23:57, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
I think you may be overstating a bit.
  1. exactly the same thing - Removing superfluous pages is the opposite of creating them. Nothing counts deletions like new revs count edits.
  2. for no good reason - I give the criteria for deletion above. It's not arbitrary.
  3. we have received multiple complaints - I haven't received any. It's difficult to assess them secondhand. I've limited deletions to 10 per day (maximum, sometimes less) to provide opportunities for feedback. As I said, there's been none to me. If someone really wants an empty talk page back, I can restore it, but their emptiness is what makes them candidates for deletion.
  4. destructive actions - As I say above, no actual talk has been deleted (or destroyed).
I can restrict the criteria even more. Whatever ill motive you may be imagining, I'd like to assure you it has nothing to do with actuality. --Saftzie (talk) 01:06, 11 December 2016 (UTC)
I am not assuming any ill motive. It is simply not helpful and is confusing people and they've complained. Isarra (talk) 01:31, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

Extension introduction request[edit source]

Extension introduction request

Hello. Please introduce the following extended functions. Nice to meet you.

MyWiki :s:w:ja.lineanswer

--Takumi3 (talk) 09:14, 12 December 2016 (UTC)

Hello. Although I'm an administrator on the Hub wiki, I'm not a member of staff. To request that staff install an extension on your wiki, you should make a request using s:w:ja.lineanswer:Special:Contact. I'll drop a note to one of them so they know to expect it. (As an aside, it's interesting to see that Japanese speakers have as much difficulty translating "yoroshiku" into English as English speakers do. In this context, we would probably say "Thank you" instead of "Nice to meet you," even though it's about the future. Don't worry about it. I know what you mean.) --Saftzie (talk) 22:27, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
Hello.Thank you for your attentive guidance.I was able to have extended functions included.Thank you for correcting English. See you.--Takumi3 (talk) 12:26, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

Green Day Wiki userpages and talk pages[edit source]

Hi, so since I imported Green Day Wikia I've been trying to make my fork as different as possible and have been deleting Wikia leftover junk. However, with the user pages and talk pages, there's too many. Can you please help me out with that? Please delete anything under this bot. I tried AWB but it doesn't work on my computer (I use Ubuntu). Castaway2000 (talk) 18:00, 17 December 2016 (UTC)

Try Pywikipediabot. Twilight~Sparkle This is MY book, and I'm gonna READ IT!!! 19:22, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
You can use my js nuke app. It's something I maintain only for myself, so how it works can change at any time. For now, you can put
<div id="js-nuke"></div>
on some page, then run
mw.loader.load('http://www.shoutwiki.com/wiki/User:Saftzie/app.nuke.js?action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');
either in your browser console or by putting it in your personal JS (e.g., common.js). Wherever you put the div, when the JS runs, an app will appear. Enter "Wikia" (without quotes) as the name to block in the first input textarea (Users to block), but uncheck the box to block it, and click "Go." The list of articles created by Wikia will populate in the second input textarea (Articles to delete). Enter the summary reason for the deletion and click the second "Go." Poof. --Saftzie (talk) 23:58, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
Why on earth does this not work? I definitely did it the right way. This makes no sense--Invalid token? Castaway2000 (talk) 04:15, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
The code definitely gets the correct token. As long as you're logged in as an administrator, it should work. I have to wonder if this is an effect from the 1.28 upgrade. Sadly, it's difficult to impossible for me to test well. The 1.28 upgrade has left me unable to log in to non-hub wiki's. --Saftzie (talk) 04:37, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
Well my other suggestion was to use AWB, which doesn't work on Ubuntu entirely for some reason. I just don't use Windows for internet any longer. Castaway2000 (talk) 07:55, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
Saftzie, so many weird things happen when I try and edit ShoutWiki now. This has happened starting today when I try to submit edits for like any article, no matter how many times I click. This is a problem with my account itself (Castaway2000) -- files.catbox.moe/cgcqrv.png . Why all these errors? 73.11.240.169 02:43, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
There are two things possible. The first is that mw 1.27 changed the way sessions were handled, because it incorporates a new authentication and authorization framework. Supposedly you can avoid problems by clearing all your cookies. (I clear my cookies every time I close my browser, so I have never see this bug, even on WikiMedia sites, where 1.27 was deployed months ago.) However, I believe ShoutWiki has separate problem. It appears to lose session data on non-hub wikis. It does that reliably for me. Only staff have any visibility into how session data is shared architecturally among wikis here, and as of Saturday they appear to be convinced that there's no problem. If you can reproduce a problem reliably, I suggest creating an account on phabricator, creating a "task," and describing the bug there. --Saftzie (talk) 03:16, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
I tried to clear my cookies, log in and in again but it didn't work. I'm so frustrated about this glitch. And it loses session data so fast. I hope this bug can get fixed soon. 05:39, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
I can edit now, awesome! Did you fix this issue? :) Castaway2000 (talk) 00:11, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
Nope. --Saftzie (talk) 00:19, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
Ok wait, I misunderstood. I still can't edit logged in over on GD Wiki because I just tried to edit an article and make no changes. Did you figure out the issue yet. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 73.11.240.169 (talkcontribs) 00:37, 20 December 2016‎ (UTC). Please sign your posts with --~~~~!
Given the investigation below, I suspect your most recent problem is the mw.loader.load statement that I had you put in your common.js. There's actually nothing wrong with the JS. Shoutwiki appears to have trouble sharing resources between wikis atm. Just the act of trying to access hub from s:w:greenday is what logs you out. --Saftzie (talk) 00:02, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
I'd appreciate if you stopped spreading lies. We know there's a problem. We've asked you to help us confirm and debug what is going. We think there's something odd going on with non-"Remember my login" cookies/sessions but I don't have access to every user's browser and machine, so I can't confirm this myself. If you're referencing the tasks I merged as duplicates (T145), or we closed as resolved (T146), it's because any remaining problem is the same issue. --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 08:14, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
I apologize for the misunderstanding. How do you think i can debug this issue? And where can i find a link to T145 and T146 issues you mentioned? 73.11.240.169 19:32, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
Hey, I'm not Lcawte but I can provide you the links: https://phabricator.shoutwiki.com/T145, and https://phabricator.shoutwiki.com/T146. :) SamanthaNguyen (talk) 20:39, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
He called me a liar, not you. --Saftzie (talk) 22:41, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
"Lies" is a rather antisocial characterization. When you said you didn't see a problem (which is indeed what you said), I just relayed that. Reacting emotionally, especially in an ostensibly professional setting, is inappropriate. I realize you're professionally inexperienced, but you need to realize that, too, and temper your reactions accordingly. If you want some data, here's some data. I can try to provide more later.
  • Use case #1
    • Starting with no cookies, going to the login page (GET the HTML for www:Special:UserLogin) , the server sends Set-Cookie for
      1. ShoutWiki_session=nd11...54l3; path=/; domain=.shoutwiki.com; httponly
    • piwik sets cookies _pk_id and _pk_ses in its JavaScript. I'm going to ignore those.
    • Upon logging in (POST), the server sends (reply to POST) Set-Cookie for
      1. ShoutWiki_session=euvs...aaqd; path=/; domain=.shoutwiki.com; httponly
      2. ShoutWikiUserID=24953499; expires=Mon, 19-Jun-2017 21:15:23 GMT; Max-Age=15552000; path=/; domain=.shoutwiki.com; httponly
      3. ShoutWikiUserName=Saftzie; expires=Mon, 19-Jun-2017 21:15:23 GMT; Max-Age=15552000; path=/; domain=.shoutwiki.com; httponly
    • Except for some new inactivity timeout, I can stay logged in to hub, edit, etc., as long as I want.
    • Upon going elsewhere (GET starter:Special:BlankPage) and sending the above cookies, the server sends (reply to GET the HTML) Set-Cookie for
      1. ShoutWiki_session=deleted; expires=Thu, 01-Jan-1970 00:00:01 GMT; Max-Age=0; path=/; domain=.shoutwiki.com; httponly
      2. ShoutWikiUserID=deleted; expires=Thu, 01-Jan-1970 00:00:01 GMT; Max-Age=0; path=/; domain=.shoutwiki.com; httponly
    • The server is telling the browser to delete the cookies. At this point, the only cookie I have left is ShoutWikiUserName. After getting all the css, js, and images, the server never sends another ShoutWiki_session.
Note that the browser has nothing to do with what cookies the server sends.
  • Use case #2
    • Clearing cookies and starting over, going to the login page (GET starter:Special:UserLogin) , the server sends Set-Cookie for
      1. ShoutWiki_session=oqb6...vgf1; path=/; domain=.shoutwiki.com; httponly
    • Upon logging in (POST), the server sends (reply to POST) Set-Cookie for
      1. ShoutWiki_session=93c9...8pfs; path=/; domain=.shoutwiki.com; httponly
      2. ShoutWikiUserID=24953499; expires=Mon, 19-Jun-2017 21:43:19 GMT; Max-Age=15552000; path=/; domain=.shoutwiki.com; httponly
      3. ShoutWikiUserName=Saftzie; expires=Mon, 19-Jun-2017 21:43:19 GMT; Max-Age=15552000; path=/; domain=.shoutwiki.com; httponly
    • UserLogin redirects back to BlankPage. The HTML for BlankPage loads, then for GET www:User:Saftzie/ui.wikimarks.css?action=raw&ctype=text/css, the server sends (reply to GET) Set-Cookie for
      1. ShoutWiki_session=deleted; expires=Thu, 01-Jan-1970 00:00:01 GMT; Max-Age=0; path=/; domain=.shoutwiki.com; httponly
      2. ShoutWikiUserID=deleted; expires=Thu, 01-Jan-1970 00:00:01 GMT; Max-Age=0; path=/; domain=.shoutwiki.com; httponly
    • ui.wikimarks.css is loaded by my global.js by inserting
      <link rel="stylesheet" href="//www.shoutwiki.com/wiki/User:Saftzie/ui.wikimarks.css?action=raw&ctype=text/css">
      into <head>. FWIW, the CSS is retrieved successfully. If I bypass the js and don't try to load anything from hub, the server does not try to delete the cookies.
Note that the above use cases are similar, but distinct. One is a session that begins on hub and attempts to transfer to a subdomain, which deletes the cookies. One begins on a subdomain and attempts to load a resource from hub, which deletes the cookies. Looking through the transactions, it occurs to me that only resources loaded through index.php appear to cause the deletion. Resources loaded through load.php appear to work just fine. "Pretty" URLs vs canonical URLs also appears not to make any difference for cookie deletion. Again, what the server sends is, or should be, independent of the browser. If your browser that isn't deleting cookies when the server requests it, then that's on your browser. Mine is just doing what the server says it should. --Saftzie (talk) 22:41, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
Okay, so a few things. Please provide further details on where exactly I said "[I] didn't see a problem". At one point I said I could no longer reproduce that, but later that day, I did manage to reproduce this, and came to some further conclusions about what was happening. You appear to have stopped reading the bug long before writing that message. Could you explicitly address this comment? Your technical details are, in certain places, very helpful and once we've got a specific understanding of the problem (very close, but you could make or break that - see the last point) it'll help us work out why the problem is occuring and help us fix it. Although I couldn't help thinking they'd be far more useful on said bug report. This section was hard enough to follow beforehand. --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 08:53, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
It's going to be a couple more days before I log in to sw phab next. --Saftzie (talk) 23:53, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Ok, thank you for helping guys. I'll have a look into this soon. 73.11.240.169 02:12, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
I give up. I just can't understand any of this, and the part about the cookies confuses me. Let's pretend all this never happened, because I feel embarrassed. 73.11.240.169 02:26, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
Don't worry about the technical details. Those were for Lcawte. For you, you should understand that you can log in to hub and edit here. If you can delete or edit your common.js on s:w:greenday, you'll be able to stay logged in there, too. The reason you get logged out there now is that your cookie gets deleted when you try to load my script from hub. There are two ways to do it: get someone else to log in there (staff or Luigim1) and delete it or possibly add something to your global.js on hub which would allow it. I could probably write you something hack-ish for your global.js, but it might take a little while to write and test. The current bug doesn't affect global.js, so it works even though it's on hub. --Saftzie (talk) 03:51, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
OK, well why don't you delete it? And my apologies for the confusion between people. I was bitter in an ostensibly professional way, so I figured it meant me. This was a frustrating issue though, so I guess you can understand. Anyway, thanks for still helping. Castaway2000 (talk) 04:56, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
It isn't you being unprofessional. It's Lcawte. I can't delete or edit your common.js, because I'm not an admin on greenday. Here's the hack, if you want to try it. Don't do anything extra, even if you think it doesn't matter.
  1. Log in to hub (unless you're already logged in to hub)
  2. Edit your global.js
  3. Copy, paste, and save the following there.
    (function (mw, $) {
    	'use strict';

    	var
    		content = '// mw.loader.load(\'http://www.shoutwiki.com/wiki/User:Saftzie/app.nuke.js?action=raw&ctype=text/javascript\');';

    	if (mw.config.get('wgServerName') === 'greenday.shoutwiki.com') {
    		$.post(mw.config.get('wgScriptPath') + '/api.php', {
    			format: 'json',
    			action: 'edit',
    			minor: 1,
    			summary: 'Comment out mw.loader.load',
    			text: content,
    			title: 'User:Castaway2000/common.js',
    			token: mw.user.tokens.get('editToken')
    		});
    	}
    }(mediaWiki, jQuery));

  4. Go to s:w:greenday:User:Castaway2000/common.js. Doing so will probably log you out. If it doesn't look like you've been logged out, refresh the page to check.
    • If you get logged out, log back in using the "log in" link, and repeat this step. There's a possibility that common.js can run before global.js (which is bad), so try a few times. If it doesn't work after 3 or 4 times, give up.
  5. Going to greenday will log you out of hub, so go back to hub and log in there again.
  6. Whether the above succeeds or fails, edit your global.js to remove the code from above and save.
If it didn't work, you'll need another admin on greenday to edit your common.js for you, either to comment out the statement or delete it. If it did work, you need to remember to log in every time you view a page on another ShoutWiki wiki (until the bug is fixed). --Saftzie (talk) 05:15, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I was able to delete it, so I deleted it altogether. Now an edit of mine finally went through. What's weird is why add global.js in step 2 but then remove it in step 6? I find that odd. Castaway2000 (talk) 05:56, 22 December 2016 (UTC)
We needed to edit common.js before it had a chance to run, but we only needed to do it once. Plus, if you ever want something else there, you wouldn't want it deleted every time you viewed a page. If you still want to use the nuke.js script to delete all the Wikia user and talk pages, then once the session bug is fixed, the script should work just fine. --Saftzie (talk) 06:08, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

Luigi's Mansion Wiki[edit source]

Hi, so today me and a few are developing a forked version of the Luigi's Mansion Wiki from Wikia. I know I import revisions like I do from there but I think the compatibility in license (CC-BY-SA) permits such. Besides, I also work to make it different from the existing material--it's just easier to work with if you have the original content. At least in my opinion.

Anyway, I came here because the site name is Luigi's Mansion but I want it to be named "Luigi's Mansion Wiki". How do I go about doing that? Help would be appreciated, thanks. Castaway2000 (talk) 20:04, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

You need to get staff to change wgSiteName in the wiki's LocalSettings.php. You can send them a message at s:w:luigismansion:Special:Contact. --Saftzie (talk) 22:17, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
I tried sending a message through Special:Contact before, and it didn't work. May I ask Lcawte for help? Castaway2000 (talk) 22:29, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
Cook879 will probably be the one who does it. --Saftzie (talk) 22:35, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
Oh sweet, it's fixed. Thank you guys. Castaway2000 (talk) 23:18, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
(got edit conflicted by you!) Normally we'd ask for a ticket so we have an easy to reference record, but I've made an exception and this should be done now. You mention you have issues using Special:Contact? I can't see any record of any contact from your username, about your wiki or with your email address which suggests you may have run into a problem (as opposed to most users who are normally just in the queue). Could you email any further specifics about what you remember regarding this issue to me directly at lcawteshoutwiki.com and we will look in to this! --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 23:20, 24 December 2016 (UTC)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I think the problem is that I blocked support@shoutwiki.com because I got tired of "changed to x has been done by x" messages. Does that interfere with Special:Contact? Castaway2000 (talk) 03:02, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

Restore userpage[edit source]

Greetings. I'm a professor at IES Puig Castellar, a High School Institute in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Catalonia. I teach Computing Systems and Networks, and recently my pupils were assigned to do a short project on MediaWiki, in which they had to create a wiki in this site and prove their knowledge on basic wiki formatting.

One of my pupils got it completely wrong and instead of creating a wiki they edited their userpage on the main shoutwiki. Furthermore, he got himself banned and the page deleted for "Spam". I have no idea what he has done, but would you kindly restore his userpage, at least temporarily, so I can grade him?

the page is User:Luquerosillo

Thanks a lot--Malbareda (talk) 19:06, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

I have restored the user page and the categories, moved the categories to his user space, and nowiki'd the categories. For future reference, here are some things that spammers do.
  1. Promote other sites, including Youtube channels, usually (but not always) including links to increase their SEO score
  2. Create fictional biographies for their user pages (although I'll admit that this one was more elaborate than most)
  3. Create multiple pages, including categories, and interlink them
I've also unblocked him. --Saftzie (talk) 20:21, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Re: Category protections[edit source]

The version used on ShoutWiki has been reverse-engineered from the Wikia version by ShoutWiki staff and is closed-source (i.e., not available for use elsewhere). There are, however, two open-source ports available:

There are instructions in the top-level folders for copying either of them to skins/monaco/. I have never installed either of them, so I cannot comment on how well they work (or don't). --Saftzie (talk) 08:52, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

No matter how much I try to allow for the fact that you're not a native English-speaker, I cannot make any sense of your question. Sorry. --Saftzie (talk) 00:11, 2 November 2017 (UTC)

It depends on what verb you're implying. If you're asking if you can ask ShoutWiki staff, sure. Lcawte and Jack Phoenix have a talk pages, too. If you're asking if you can be ShoutWiki staff, I can't make that determination, but they can. --Saftzie (talk) 22:04, 2 November 2017 (UTC)

Spamming - HELP![edit source]

Hello, and thanks for getting back to me so quickly! The wiki in question is s:w:webkinzpictureguide. What I mean by "I don't run it" is that I'm not the person who created the wiki, but I am an admin there. If you look at the page s:w:webkinzpictureguide:Special:RecentChanges you can see the kind of spam with which I'm dealing. Starting yesterday, I started editing the pages before I deleted them with SPAMSPAMSPAM etc. to block out the websites that usually head these spam pages from even being seen, because most of them led to fraudulent tarot and horoscope sites or adult websites, and the wiki I work on is for a children's website. I can't possibly be having children getting curious and typing those websites into the address bar! Even after deleting a spam page, the content would still partially show under the RecentChanges page, as you can see if you search RecentChanges with the option set to 500 instead of 50.

What I'm looking for is that all the content is public, viewable by anyone, and able to be crawled by search engine spiders such as Google, but that only the people whom the person who runs the wiki, s:w:webkinzpictureguide:User:Choircutie, authorizes to edit and create pages have that capability. We've already protected every page from being edited by anyone who is not an admin, because we've had lots of page vandalism in the past by spammers, but the spammers started creating new pages and posting their spam there.

Thanks so much for your quick attention to this matter! I've been up half the night dealing with this issue, and I'm utterly exhausted. Unless I sit on the wiki all day, the spammers come by every few hours and post more garbage. Loopy (talk) 14:53, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

I'm only an admin on Hub, so I won't be the one to implement any changes on s:w:webkinzpictureguide. However, I can give you some advice.
  1. If you block the user that created the page before you delete the page, the page creation (and any comments) will be removed from Special:RecentChanges. (It may take a minute or two. It's not immediate.) However, if anyone else (other than the creator) edits the page, they won't be removed. So, for example, if a non-admin blanks the page to get rid of the spam, then an admin later deletes the page, all the records stay in RecentChanges. Records do eventually age-out of the RecentChanges lists, anyway.
  2. Changing the wiki to a private (or semi-private) wiki basically creates a new user group Invited_Users and reserves certain "rights" to users in that group. In your case, you would want only the edit and (maybe) createaccount rights reserved, so that anyone could continue to read. Restricting createaccount doesn't stop people from creating an account on other wikis in the farm. Accounts are shared across all wikis, so it's not particularly effective to restrict it. Bureaucrats can invite and un-invite users. If you ever want non-invited users to be able to create content (like talking on talk pages), then that will require a more complicated solution, which is also possible.
You can request changing your wiki, or rather Choircutie should do so, by sending a message using s:w:webkinzpictureguide:Special:Contact. It may take a while to get a response from staff. Supposedly they hang out on the IRC channel #ShoutWiki on freenode, if you want faster response. --Saftzie (talk) 21:40, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

Question[edit source]

Is there a way to make editing look like this (as it does on Wikipedia) instead of this (as it does on ShoutWiki)? Or is that not something that ShoutWiki is able to achieve? MusicNation (talk) 23:06, 16 February 2018 (UTC)

I'm not Saftzie (and I'm not part of the ShoutWiki Staff), but I think I can answer that question. You see, infoboxes on Wikipedia use a meta-template called "Infobox". The easiest way to get it on your ShoutWiki wiki is to import it. Assuming you're an administrator on your wiki, go to Wikipedia's export special page (wikipedia:en:Special:Export), type in "Template:Infobox" (without quotes) on the box below "Add pages manually:", check the "Include templates" checkbox to make sure all dependencies are imported too, make sure that "Save as file" is also checked, and click "Export".
Then, on your ShoutWiki wiki, go to Special:Import and choose the file you just downloaded/received from Wikipedia, and click the "Upload file" button.
Done! You can now use the {{Infobox}} template on your wiki. --stranger195 (talkcontribsguestbook) 02:04, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
Thank you, however, I have the infobox installed; my request is how the editor appears. In other words, I'm speaking in terms of how the "Edit" page appears, etc. MusicNation (talk) 03:00, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
If you mean the font size, you can change that with CSS. Something like
#wpTextbox1 {
	font-size: 13pt;
}
in your personal common.css or (for everyone) MediaWiki:Common.css would change it. Adjust "13pt" to whatever size you like. Personally, I'm not a fan of the magnum-sized fonts, but more web sites are using them to accommodate smart phone editors, who have tiny screens compared to desktops, so the fonts aren't microscopic on those platforms. --Saftzie (talk) 18:25, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
Awesome, thank you! I was actually talking about the typeface/appearance, but I figured that out, as well! Thank you so much for the size change; I used to love small sizes (in text), but with a bigger screen, I've come to appreciate something a bit more spacious! MusicNation (talk) 14:51, 18 February 2018 (UTC)

Restrict the edition on my wiki[edit source]

Hi, Saftzie! On this wiki, founded by me, can you restrict the edition to invited users, please? İ want anyone to be able to read the wiki, but only invited users can edit. This wiki is being constantly spammed, so please do it as soon as possible. Thanks! --Josep Maria Roca Peña (talk) 21:12, 18 February 2018 (UTC)

Although I'm an admin on Hub, I'm not staff. Only staff can change the configuration of a wiki. I know getting their attention can be difficult. Although I've never gone there, supposedly staff hang out in the #Shoutwiki channel in IRC on Freenode. I notice you already tried Jack's talk page. You can also try s:w:it.winx:Special:Contact, if you haven't already. --Saftzie (talk) 23:23, 18 February 2018 (UTC)

  • you look my request?--Msnhinet8 (talk) 02:32, 23 March 2018 (UTC)
I believe changing the LocalSettings.php variable $wgLocaltimezone may get you what you want. The server would still keep Universal time. Any registered users who have set a timezone personal preference would continue to see their personal preference. $wgLocaltimezone only works for anonymous users and registered users who have not set a personal preference. Although I'm an admin on Hub, I'm not staff. Only staff can change the configuration of a wiki. I know it can be difficult to get their attention, but that's whom you need to contact to make the change. --Saftzie (talk) 16:09, 23 March 2018 (UTC)

banjokazooie.shoutwiki.com[edit source]

returns a 503 error when i try and open it. is there a way to fix this? is it ok if the wiki gets deleted? it's been broken since like last year. i shouldn't have imported articles. wish i didn't Castaway2000 (talk) 12:21, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi, so I've taken the quick look and the settings file for that wiki is completely empty. I'm not entirely sure how this has happened if you were importing articles. Did you ever file a support ticket about this? If so, could you send the numbers to the email address listed on my user page? --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 13:28, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
No I don't know how to file a support ticket. Want to explain more? Castaway2000 (talk) 19:13, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

infobox on left[edit source]

Hi, do you know why the infobox is to the left in this wiki. For instance s:w:conker:Conker: Live & Reloaded ? Since i'm not good with templates (and pretty much copy template designs), do you know how to fix this? Castaway2000 (talk) 01:54, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

Usually infoboxes are floated right. The infobox on the page you linked isn't floated at all. The template applies the CSS class "infobox" to the table, but the infobox class is not defined. I'd start there. --Saftzie (talk) 03:40, 9 July 2018 (UTC)
thank you, i got it fixed. Castaway2000 (talk) 10:13, 9 July 2018 (UTC)

2MB limit[edit source]

Is it ok if Conker Wiki's filesize limit is extended to 10MB, if not 5MB? there's some artwork i want to upload on it. Thanks Castaway2000 (talk) 21:42, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

You'd have to ask staff. I'm not sure if it's a per-wiki config. --Saftzie (talk) 23:52, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
right, keep forgetting that you're not staff. Castaway2000 (talk) 11:53, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
lcawte isn't responding. i kinda find it important for the limit to be raised--do you want to take this up with shoutwiki staff yourself? Is 2MB the limit for every wiki to save on storage? Castaway2000 (talk) 17:35, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
ok wait, i saw your comment. i mean how do i embed large images in a gallery then? Castaway2000 (talk) 17:49, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
You cannot include external images in <gallery> tags. The ability to do so has been a feature request for MediaWiki for a while, but it hasn't happened yet. For external image galleries, you'd have to create a table or something and to use CSS to resize/thumbnail the images. If you're including large images only in galleries, you can resize them (smaller than the 2MB limit) before upload. What is it ultimately that you're trying to do? --Saftzie (talk) 20:27, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
I'm trying to upload photos like these to this gallery page, but the files I linked exceed the 2MB limit. Castaway2000 (talk) 01:39, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Is there a reason you don't want to downsize the images? Is there an advantage or other purpose to the full resolution versions? --Saftzie (talk) 02:20, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
I dunno, maybe i'm just used to a 10MB limit on other wikis, like Super Mario Wiki. For me it comes more natural to upload it in lossless, full size. Downscaling the images would result in quality loss, which i don't want. For me, it also helps to catalog the best resolution image. Is every wiki forced to only have a 2MB limit? Is there really no other way? Castaway2000 (talk) 13:04, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
2MB is the default limit. It might be possible to increase on a per-wiki basis, but staff has to decide. You're displaying just thumbnails, anyway, so you've already lost resolution. Since you mostly want to use the wiki as a file repository, I'd be inclined to urge you to use a dedicated image-hosting site (photobucket, etc.) for full-res images, but again staff gets to decide whether to increase the size limit. --Saftzie (talk) 20:57, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
ok, well thank you for answering some questions for me. i appreciate it--just wanted to see how. it also does take more time to alter a higher quality image in like gimp, so yeah, like slightly downscaling. really an unscaled >2mb image would take up way too much of a web page, so there wouldn't be any point in that regard, but yeah. Castaway2000 (talk) 21:11, 26 July 2018 (UTC)
Somehow the limit increased to 10MB on both green day and conker wiki. Do you know how this happened? Not complaining--i think it's pretty cool but yeah. Castaway2000 (talk) 01:57, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Staff must have decided an increased file size limit was okay. --Saftzie (talk) 17:50, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
So the limit was 10MB on HHVM. We recently switched back to Zend PHP (well, to PHP 7) as we need to future-proof ourselves as HHVM moves away from PHP (and MediaWiki chose to stick with PHP.) Spotted this, or some report somewhere and bumping the upload limit was one of the last few things I did before rushing out the door to work the day before heading to Oman and I guess I forgot to reply. PSA: Please note - we're not a file host. If you're uploading pictures and their primary use isn't for a wiki article, you risk your site being deleted! --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 10:37, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
It wasn't my plan to use it for a file host, really. It's only meant to host wiki content. See here: Conker Castaway2000 (talk) 12:52, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

Top Wikis?[edit source]

Apparently South Park Wiki is in the top wikis list but it does not exist. Kinda glad it was deleted because it was too ambitious for me to handle. Castaway2000 (talk) 00:49, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Done. --Saftzie (talk) 05:09, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

Jack Phoenix[edit source]

  • hi,please he Jack Phoenix when back shoutwiki message? you know?--Msnhinet8 (talk) 04:49, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
    If you're asking me how quickly Jack responds to messages on his talk page, it can be days or never. If you're asking something else, you'll have to try asking me with different words. --Saftzie (talk) 23:41, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
    • ok, you can open create a wiki exceed 5 wikis?--Msnhinet8 (talk) 23:49, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
    • beacuse i need shoutwiki's wiki. thanks.--Msnhinet8 (talk) 23:50, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
      Each registered username (with an email address) is limited to creating 5 wikis maximum. --Saftzie (talk) 23:53, 20 August 2018 (UTC)
      • if need 5 wikis the above, how can i do?--Msnhinet8 (talk) 00:00, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
      • not like to wikia or miraheze can very wikis?--Msnhinet8 (talk) 00:02, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
      • at home?--Msnhinet8 (talk) 04:18, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
        If you're asking how to create more than 5 wikis, you'd have to use a different registered username with (I think) a different email address. I'm not sure whatever else you're trying to ask. --Saftzie (talk) 22:37, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
        • ok,thanks.--Msnhinet8 (talk) 22:53, 21 August 2018 (UTC)
          • Please note that this advice is not correct. If you have a legitimate reason for actually needing more than 5 wikis attributed to your account, you need to explain that using a support request. The limit is in place to protect ShoutWiki. Additional empty wikis add a silly amount of processing time on to site-wide processes and make life difficult for everyone. Additionally, the CreateWiki process isn't exactly the least resource intensive thing we do. Creating multiple accounts to flout this limiter can be considered a bannable action! --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 10:41, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

Slow connections[edit source]

ShoutWiki has been slow recently. Do you know the cause for this? Castaway2000 (talk) 16:09, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

It's probably architectural changes associated with switching virtual machines from HHVM. I doubt the VMs themselves are that much slower. --Saftzie (talk) 19:08, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
Now the website is fast again. Castaway2000 (talk) 18:30, 26 August 2018 (UTC)
So Facebook has become our default place to post updates, but, this was because there was a rather long running script that was updating all the database schemas for 1.31.0, using an annoying amount of computing power. This is all done now. --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 11:36, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

how to feature a wiki?[edit source]

Hey Saftzie, me again. I was wonder what does it take to make, let's say Conker Wiki a featured wiki. I wanted to be a good example of the content included on the site. Castaway2000 (talk) 00:23, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

I'm not sure what criteria staff use to "feature" a "top" wiki. I'd guess some combination of number of contributors and number of content pages, but it may just be caprice. --Saftzie (talk) 23:51, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
Conker Wiki has 162 articles now. Does that count as featurable? i have someone who is working with me on it. Castaway2000 (talk) 01:02, 26 October 2018 (UTC)
I still don't know what criteria staff use to decide. --Saftzie (talk) 03:32, 26 October 2018 (UTC)

Registration?[edit source]

Someone I know on Discord is attempting to register an account, but are met with an error. Is this to do with system upgrades? Castaway2000 (talk) 01:51, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

Castaway2000, you really need to start filing these sorts of things as support requests with ShoutWiki staff by emailing supportshoutwiki.com - this is an issue with an extension that we can not fix without knowing about it! (We've all got accounts, so it is rare we'd register a new one!) We don't routinely monitor the talk pages of non-staff members, so it is very lucky I spotted this. --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 11:34, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
Okay, i'm used to sending messages on talk pages though. This isn't a new account from me--it's from someone i know who is planning to register on conker wiki Castaway2000 (talk) 13:19, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
Regardless of what platform you use, you still need to contact a member of ShoutWiki staff about bugs in the software (which should now be fixed) --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 13:26, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
I guess that's a significant reason why the rate of spam, including anonymous spam, has dropped to exactly zero for the past few days. The other reason, I suspect, is that spambots are timing out on the slow responses. --Saftzie (talk) 00:24, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

create a wiki[edit source]

  • hi,or you can help me create a wiki?--Msnhinet8 (talk) 09:10, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

helped a user register[edit source]

Hi Saftzie, what is ShoutWiki's opinion on creating user accounts for other users. I helped a user called "Metalex123" register because he was having problems creating an account. I used Special:CreateAccount to help. Castaway2000 (talk) 01:08, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

You're limited to creating 5 accounts using any registered account. Generally people should be able to create their own accounts, although I know there's been some difficulty with that lately. Judging by the recent increase in spam, it seems those difficulties are over. --Saftzie (talk) 04:51, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
Correct (about the CAPTCHA issues bit, at least) --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 09:05, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

where ask I for extensions/skins to be added to my wiki[edit source]

hello, i asking, where can I ask for skins/extensions to be added to my wikis we could use as test wikis: s:w:sv.publictestwiki (sv version) and s:w:publictestwiki (en version), where can i ask for skins/extensions to be added? have we Phacricator or a accessible LocalSettings.php editable by the user, so I can add the extensions needed, these extensions want i to add:

Abusefilter, WikiEditor, CodeEditor, Widgets, NewUserMessage, and I also want to change the user rights for the users, here are these I want to change:

also want I to add protect and delete locks that restrict deleting and protecting pages, and I want also to add files from wikimedia commons instead of uploading the separately, please can you tell where i can add those? --psl85 (talk) 15:54, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

There's phabricator, s:w:sv.publictestwiki:Special:Contact, s:w:publictestwiki:Special:Contact, and (although I've never gone there) #ShoutWiki on irc.freenode.net. --Saftzie (talk) 21:26, 12 September 2018 (UTC)
