User talk:Cook879/Archive 1
Hi - This is an archive. Feel free to post a message on my current talk page. |
Congrats[edit source]
Congratulations on being selected for an intern position. You should consider hanging out on IRC with us, and help make the channel livelier ;) --Skizzerz 03:39, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, congratulations, Richard! Your presence would greatly improve our morale, I'm sure. —Will Kilgour (talk) 05:38, 5 August 2012 (UTC)
Humpy-pedia[edit source]
I responded to you on my talk page, but since you haven't replied I'll say it here. Those complaints made about the wiki were all fake. When I replied to the 'MHS Staff' user, they responded by revealing they were in fact trolling. They were just trying to get the site deleted. So, it would be good if the wiki didn't get shut down. Thanks.--Red Viper (talk) 09:06, 10 September 2012 (UTC)
Consejos[edit source]
Hola! ¿Cómo podría hacer para tener un wiki exitoso (en tu opinión)? Saludos. --Acapulco (talk) 01:17, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Acapulco.
- I'd say the key to a successful wiki is having a good user base. Together you'll be able to create high quality content, and then that should help you work your way up the Google rankings. Promoting your wiki elsewhere, in particular to people with the same interest will help build this content.--Cook879 talk 08:31, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
Error[edit source]
¿Porqué el contador de artículos de mi Wiki marca 0 artículos? :( --Aguaje (talk) 02:52, 9 October 2012 (UTC) http://10palabras.shoutwiki.com/wiki/P%C3%A1gina_principal
- Hi Aguaje,
- The article count measures the number of content pages, and a content page must contain a link to another article. As none of your articles have internal links, they do not count as content pages and so that's why you have 0 articles. An internal link is done through
[[<pagename>]]
. More details can be found at Help:Links. Hope this helps. --Cook879 talk 16:15, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
Account creation[edit source]
Hi, I set up my (private) wiki so that only registered users can read pages, but I want to limit registration to invite-only so that I know who can read the wiki. How can I do this? Kind regards, Skandrino (talk) 21:04, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
- Hey Skandrino,
- This is the default for private wikis - currently everyone but you (and ShoutWiki staff) will be given a permissions error if they try to access your wiki. You can invite users through Special:Invite, which you can find more details about here. Note that users must have made an account before you invite them (alternatively you can create an account for them).
- Hope this helps,
- --Cook879 talk 21:08, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
- Yes I know viewing is restricted, but I want to restrict account creation as well so that no one can join.without an invite. I didn't do this when I created the wiki. How can I change this? The MediaWiki help site says it's in localsettings.php but I can't access that. Skandrino (talk) 14:20, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
- The settings files are editable only by staff. It's useless to restrict account creation because user accounts are shared between all wikis. In practise for private wikis, it means that logging in with your ShoutWiki credentials is perfectly possible, but (depending on the wiki's individual configuration) you likely can't do anything else there without an invite. --Jack Phoenix (contact) 16:44, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
- On my wiki ([1]) anyone can read and edit when they make their own account (without invite). I want to change this so they can't do that without an invite, is that possible?
- I restricted both to those with an account, but I allowed everyone to create an account without invite, and want to change the latter. Skandrino (talk) 23:48, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
- You can't restrict account creation, as accounts are shared across ShoutWiki. This means that no matter where someone creates an account, they can view your wiki, as can any of the 3140 registered users we currently have. I'm guessing you didn't realize this, and so we can change the viewing and editing restrictions to invite only if you want.--Cook879 talk 16:26, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
- I restricted both to those with an account, but I allowed everyone to create an account without invite, and want to change the latter. Skandrino (talk) 23:48, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
Sorry to bother you once more, I'm currently the only one who can invite users, admins or bureaucrats cannot do it and I'm the only steward on the wiki. Can I give this right to admins? Or else, could you promote User:Aida to steward? Skandrino (talk) 14:19, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
Bot[edit source]
¿Hay posibilidad de programar a un bot para que copie artículos de otros Wikis? --Aguaje (talk) 06:32, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
- Hi. I'm not sure whether using a bot is possible, but you can use Special:Export and Special:Import to move content, providing the license allows it. Using Special:Export on the wiki you want to copy articles from will get you an XML file with the history and content of the pages you've chosen, and you can upload them onto your wiki with Special:Import. Again, please make sure the license is compatible before you do this.--Cook879 talk 11:07, 13 October 2012 (UTC)
Wikinarco[edit source]
My wiki (Wikinarco) is very very very slow!! My net is fast in all webpages except Wikinarco :( --Alien (talk) 07:33, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

Private Wiki[edit source]
Hi Cook, I was really wanting to have my wiki set up so that everybody could view it, but only invited people would be able to edit it. Is it possible to set it up that way? Peacemaker (talk) 15:20, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

My wiki needs to a different skin...[edit source]
Can you please set the default skin from "Vector" to Monobook? Its at http://astroempiresfanon.shoutwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page and the vector skin I hate. --EriusMaldex (talk) 17:32, 13 December 2012 (UTC)

Promoting Invader Zim Wiki (ShoutWiki)[edit source]
Do you have any idea how I can promote Invader Zim Wiki (http://invaderzim.shoutwiki.com)? I don't see any results of it on Google. Also, feel free to edit if you have any knowledge about the show. Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 19:36, 21 February 2013 (UTC)
- Firstly to get onto Google you're gonna need more content! You currently have 8 pages and Wikia's Invader Zim Wiki has 610, so naturally they're going to appear before you at the moment, but this is to be expected as the wiki's not even a week old. To get more content and users you could promote your site on Invader Zim fan sites and forums, Twitter, Facebook and other social networks. When doing this, as there is already a Wikia site, you might want to come up with reasons why your site will be better (less intrusive advertising, more customizable layout, e.t.c.). I wish I could help but I haven't even heard of Invader Zim until now.--Cook879 talk 14:31, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
Excuse me, but.[edit source]
Why am I limited to only making five wikis? I want to make a fifth one about video games and such, but I don't want to waste my fifth wiki on this. Why am I limited to five wikis in any case? Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 00:00, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
- The reason there is a limit is because creating a wiki is a huge undertaking. It takes lots of time to create and maintain one wiki and get it up the Google rankings, let alone five. While I agree a video game wiki would be good, it should be created by someone who can devote the time and effort required for it.--Cook879 talk 17:54, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
- Should I waste my fifth wiki on a video game wiki for ShoutWiki? Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 21:08, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
- Based off of what you've said I'd say no, because you just don't seem to want it that badly. That being said I encourage anyone who wants to give it a shot to do just that.--Cook879 talk 22:19, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
- Can you please delete my VG Magazines wiki so I can have space for two more wikis to create? Link: http://vgmagazines.shoutwiki.com. I'd appreciate that. Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 01:35, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
- Done--Cook879 talk 18:53, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
- Since you deleted that wiki, I decided to make a video games wiki for the wiki here. After all, I know a lot about old gaming. What do you think? Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 01:21, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
- I think good luck.--Cook879 talk 12:47, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Thanks[edit source]
Thanks for changing my wiki's license :). You made my day. By the way, why do all wikis have an upload limit of two megabytes? I think it should at least be something like five megabytes. Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 23:02, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
- Good to hear! There is an open bug about the file limitations at our Bugzilla. Feel free to read the discussion (bear in mind its over 2 years old) and add your own comments. --Cook879 talk 23:15, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
Wiki deletion and instant commons[edit source]
Hi, I have apparently already created 5 wikis. But actually three of them were created by mistake, when I was not sure what to create. I actually don't even remember their names except one: dictionary.shoutwiki.com. I know the two wikis that I want to keep: 42 and astronomy . So I want all my wikis deleted except 42 and astronomy. Could you do this, please? Also I would like instant commons activated for the wiki evolution.shoutwiki.com. Thanks. -- Muhammad2017 (talk) 09:06, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
Note that I did not create evolution wiki but I am working on it. So basically I work on 4 wikis now. Two (42 and astronomy) created by me and the other two (chalachitra and evolution) created by the user Arundhati. Except these you can delete all other wikis created by me. -- Muhammad2017 (talk) 09:13, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
Request[edit source]
Could you please remove the "s" in the Video Games Wiki title of my wiki? I'd appreciate that. I basically mean I want the name to be Video Game Wiki. Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 14:08, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
Captcha[edit source]
Since spambots seem to be attacking the wiki, I suggest add a captcha if you want to register on the wiki. That should protect us from spambots. There probably also needs to be a spam filter on the wiki like on Wikipedia and Wikia. Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 16:00, 31 March 2013 (UTC)
- Hi. We do have captcha in place, as you can see if you log out and go to create a new account. We also have a spam filter which staff can use to block users, websites and phrases globally. We know what we're doing and we're not new to working things. :P ☆The Solar Dragon☆ 21:51, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

Limiting registration[edit source]
Hello, Our wiki seems to have a problem with hit-and-run spambots - do you know how to change the rules of the wiki to limit registration? Aerospeed (talk) 21:59, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
- If you give me the wiki name I can restrict editing to invited editors only.--Cook879 talk 22:18, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
- It is F1 Alternate. Changing it to registered users only is the best option. Just show me how to invite people to the wiki if they want to join. Are super-mods like you the only people who can change such permissions? Aerospeed (talk) 14:10, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
Upload size[edit source]
I noticed. Thanks for doing so :). Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 23:59, 13 April 2013 (UTC)
- Could you please delete The Mario Encyclopedia? I no longer need the wiki and there seems to be an upload problem. I also want to move the URL title for it. I'd appreciate if you could help. Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 22:58, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
An Idea for ShoutWiki[edit source]
Since Scratchpad Wikia allows Mini Wikis on that wiki, I was wondering if there could be something on ShoutWiki called Micro Wikis for wikis that aren't big enough to be a wiki themselves, say Treehouse of Horror Wiki or the Simpsons Shorts Wiki as both are under one-hundred pages related to that I think. I'd love consideration of this idea. Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 20:37, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
- The way I see it, and I'm sure my fellow staff members would agree, that the size of the wiki isn't important it is the content and community. Looking at Scratchpad Wikia, it appears to just be a wiki someone created and the only thing holding the micro-wikis together are categories - I can't imagine these 'wikis' are easy to navigate or find. Even if you can't break 100 pages, your site will be much better off as a standard wiki instead of a micro one.--Cook879 talk 23:33, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
- Oh, and would it be okay to adopt wikis if the 'crat/founder is inactive at a certain wiki for a long period of time (e.g. Wikeverything)? I haven't edited much there yet, but I'll try to. Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 17:38, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
- If you've contributed well then sure.--Cook879 talk 22:04, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
- Another thing, if you want to make a wiki about ROM hacking, emulators, homebrew, etc. What would be a good name for the wiki? The best I could come up with is Unofficial Gaming Wiki, but that doesn't sound good enough. I'd appreciate help. Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 00:49, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

Could you please tell me if it is possible to get the Poem-Extension working on Magical plants? (Descrotion see here). Thanks a lot. --Medea (talk) 16:14, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

- The poem extension was temporarily disabled as part of our upgrade today due to a compatability problem that we should be able to resolve tomorrow, at which point it'll be globally enabled again!

Would like to show my support of WikiApiary[edit source]
I just discovered that my wiki is monitored by WikiApiary, and since I like the concept of their wiki, I wanted to show my support by adding a WikiApiary "Monitored By" notice to my wiki footer.
Would this be possible?
Arcane (talk) 02:41, 19 July 2013 (UTC)Arcane
- I've added the code from that second link to your wiki's LocalSettings.php file. Note that the footer isn't present in your default skin, Monaco, so it doesn't appear there.--Cook879 talk 22:17, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
- I just checked, and I noticed it only shows up on certain skins like Vector. Still, thanks for adding it. Arcane (talk) 08:19, 21 July 2013 (UTC)Arcane
