Thank you (RE: request)[edit source]

Thanks Jack (RE: request). I was able to create the wiki. I did not have the time to respond straight away. Torchickens (talk) 17:30, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

Request for adding extensions and namespaces[edit source]

Hi Jack Phoenix,
I want you to add some extensions and namespaces to my wiki. would you add them?

  1. About extensions, my wiki needs WikiEditor and Abusefilter extension because my wiki editors think badly about editing environment and my wiki suffers from vandalist often.
  2. About namespaces, my wiki needs five namespaces: "資料", "ニュース", "図書", "ファーム" and "画像集". they mean "Database", "News", "Books", "Farm" and "Galleries".
In addition, I want you to add these alias to the namespaces with $wgNamespaceAliases.
Database", "Databases", "Source", "Sources", "DB"
News"
Book", "Books"
Farm", "Farms", "Incubator"
Gallery", "Galleries"

(That's same as sentence what was written in Cook879's talkpage. possibly that may already be done by him.)

Features[edit source]

It appears some features do no longer work at seikai.shoutwiki.com. I have no idea what happened.

  • The tables that have hide/show features are now all visible.
  • Information text below images don't show up anymore; happens with new articles
  • I don't see the dump button on the statistic page
  • Nested parser templates to convert text into image glyphs don't seem to work. Well, they worked on wikkii, though. No clue here.

That's as far as I can see things that are broken. Almael (talk) 16:20, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

Can you link me to a few pages which show the first and second issues in action?
As for the "database dumps on request" feature, it has been disabled since October 2013. Truth be told, the code was pretty awful and didn't scale (my code, my fault) — the source code of the DumpsOnDemand feature still available on GitHub as an example for other developers on how not to implement such a feature.
If you need an up-to-date dump of your wiki's database, let us know and we'll be happy to provide you one.
What kind of nested parser voodoo are we talking about here? Can you link me to the template in question and some page(s) which uses it? Do you know of a functional wiki which has a similar template? According to WikiIndex, Wikkii has been offline for almost/over a year, so I cannot check what extensions were installed on the Wikkii wiki where the feature you mentioned was working. --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 08:33, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
collapsible table
neither image nor file work
Yeah, I found out about wikkii's demise recently, too. main looping template; it parses a string (was perfectly working part); and tries to parse double letters if fails exits to outer loop (this part doesn't seem to work regardless). I think going back one letter doesn't work. It seems only bad code works (actually trying to debug the complexity). The actual replacer part seems fine. The markup language makes it hard to look through sorry. Almael (talk) 11:51, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
The collapsible table on s:w:seikai:Anime seems to be working for me on Internet Explorer 11 under Windows 7. What browser/OS are you using?
As for the file s:w:seikai:File:Potentials.png on s:w:seikai:Maneuver (orbit), there are two separate issues in there:
  1. You need |thumb in the file "parameters" for the caption to show up, i.e. [[File:Potentials.png|right|200px|thumb|region of orbital energy
  2. The second usage of the Legend template contains the problematic character =, which is normally a part of the template syntax, much like the pipe character. So MediaWiki interprets {{Legend|#0A0A0A|forbidden region=energetic inacessible}} as "first (unnamed) parameter to the template called Legend is #0A0A0A and second parameter is a named parameter called 'forbidden region' and its value is 'energetic inacessible'". This, obviously, isn't what you meant, but MediaWiki is fooled into thinking that. You should be able to work around this by creating a template which contains nothing but the character = and then using that template instead of the = character, like this: {{Legend|#0A0A0A|forbidden region{{equals}}energetic inacessible}}
Yikes, the looping template is indeed pretty complicated! I'll try to take a closer look at it during the next week and hopefully succeed in wrapping my head around it — wikitext isn't making it very easy. :-/ --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 00:12, 5 July 2015 (UTC)
Firefox 25.0. The tables worked fine before but if it works for you then it should be fine. I guess I will have to update.
I see. I will have to write down the finer difference for the future.
Yeah, I wish there's an editor that would make it easier to see the structure and an engine to test these things off-line. That's why I split it all into templates to minimize the confusing code. The outer loop goes through each letter in the string and only goes into the inner loop to check for the double letters. It's a simple algorithm but the IFs are making things complicated to see. I have debugged it numerous times but still can't see the problem other than guessing - the string pointer doesn't go back if the double letter test fails. Almael (talk) 23:10, 5 July 2015 (UTC)

Semantic MediaWiki on "my" wikis[edit source]

Hi Jack,
It seems that Semantic MediaWiki doesn't update the properties anymore. See for s:w:fr.24:Spécial:Browse/Michael_O'Neill for an example. Many semantic data are written on the main article but nothing appears here. Is it possible to debug it, or is it because of the use of HVVM instead of PHP? May be it's time to upgrade SMW? Thank you for your answer. --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 14:21, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

Seems to work now. Thank you. --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 21:20, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
So we've not touched SMW at all. I don't intend on doing so. When 1.25 first came out, there was talk in the developer community of it breaking with 1.25 out of the box. I've no idea if they've fixed that. But we also have a number of other wikis using lots of odd little SMW add-on extensions, which are poorly maintained in most cases. These create a huge dependency mess which is a huge hassle to deal with. Upgrading SMW is one of many items on my TODO list, but most things above it are higher priority or far less enraging. --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 10:15, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

Article Background Image[edit source]

Is it possible to have background images for an article that's layered above the wiki background and below the article content? If so is it possible to have one at the top and one at the bottom? Are even more images possible e.g. for automatic adjusting to page size? Almael (talk) 08:18, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

Extensions[edit source]

Could you please activate extensions needed for the use of Side box template and About template. It appears invoking Side box and hatenote do not work. Magic word DISPLAYTITLE template doesn't work either. Example usages s:w:seikai:Seikai_no_Senki_1 and s:w:seikai:Seikai_no_Senki. Almael (talk) 03:05, 21 July 2015 (UTC)

(How'd I manage to miss this before? Agh, so sorry!) The {{#invoke}} parser function as well as the Module: namespace and other related things are a part of the Scribunto extension, which I've now enabled on s:w:seikai. You may need to purge the caches of the related templates etc. by making a null (or otherwise insignificant) edit to the templates in question.
{{DISPLAYTITLE:}}, which is a built-in magic word, is restricted by a separate setting called $wgRestrictDisplayTitle, which attempts to ensure that the new title normalizes back to the page's canonical title, i.e. you can use DISPLAYTITLE to apply cosmetic changes like bolding etc. but you can't (by default) make the title of the "Foo" page show up as "Bar". I've turned off $wgRestrictDisplayTitle on your wiki, so you're able to set arbitrary titles w/ DISPLAYTITLE now. --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 20:06, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

Request for DPLforum extension[edit source]

Hello, Jack Phoenix! (lol) I want the mw:Extension:DPLforum extension to be enabled on Templates Wiki and move mainspace pages starting with "Forum:" into the coming-soon Forum namespace, so our forums'll work.

Thank you!
stranger195 (talkcontribsguestbook) 12:19, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

Done. As a side note, when requesting an extension which adds new namespaces it's usually best to avoid creating pages in said namespaces, because once such an extension is activated, the pre-existing pages which are prefixed with the new namespace's name become inaccessible until the server-side maintenance script namespaceDupes.php is run. In this case, there was only one page, so it was a very quick fix to do. --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 20:06, 28 August 2015 (UTC)
Can you also enable InstantCommons? This will help with missing files. Thanks! --stranger195 (talkcontribsguestbook) 00:28, 29 August 2015 (UTC)
Consider it done! --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 02:40, 29 August 2015 (UTC)

Favicon error message[edit source]

  1. I created my first wiki last November. It would not accept the favicon I added. Looking at the favicon file history showed a message "The image “Favicon.ico” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors." A few weeks later the message disappeared and the new favicon replaced the ShoutWiki favicon.
  2. Last week I created my second wiki. Again it has the same message and the favicon has not updated.
  3. Over the weekend a new wiki was created. It is showing the same message.

Can the favicon coding be checked please to see if there is an error which is blocking new favicons. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Percy (talkcontribs) 06:40, August 31, 2015 (UTC+8). Please sign your posts with --~~~~!

I'll see what we can do about that — I vaguely recall there being a similar error in the past, so it should definitely be something that we're able to fix without much of a hassle, I hope. --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 19:35, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for fixing this problem so promptly. All wikis now displaying their favicons. Percy (talk) 21:59, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Deleting InterWikisWiki[edit source]

It seems that this wiki is unnecessary, as WikisWiki covers the topic and more about wikis. Can you delete it? (Oh, and it can be found s:w:interwikis. It's about interwiki prefixes, links, and interlanguage links, which WikisWiki already has.) Thanks! --stranger195 (talkcontribsguestbook) 09:17, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

In future, please file a support ticket. --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 09:45, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
Aye, our wiki deletion policy clearly states that duplicate wikis shouldn't be created if and when there's no compelling reason for that. We've been planning on doing a cleanup sprint for a while, deleting a bunch of old and unused wikis to free up subdomain names and whatnot. Stay tuned! --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 19:35, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

Vandalism/Personal Attack[edit source]

Blocking of User:Webkinzdiva1[edit source]

Hi Jack,

Thank you for stopping by my page and letting me know that Webkinzdiva contacted you.

They were blocked because I am wanting a wiki where I can control who joins, and meant to make it private, but am unable change it. In the past I have had issues with users making edits that I didn't approve of, and due to that I block anyone that joins that I don't know. I'm on a well known Webkinz Fan Site (Webkinz Insider) as well as Facebook, and I encourage people wanting to edit to private message me either place or email me, so I know who they are.

While I'm not really looking for more wiki editors at this point in time, I would be willing to consider letting webkinzdiva join if they contact me. They can reach me one of the following ways:

  • Send a Private Message to dancerchick914 on Webkinz Insider
  • Send a Private Message to Michele Webkinz (facebook.com/dancerchick914)
  • Or email me at dancerchick914@facebook.com

I had future plans to create a contact me page on my wiki for if and when I am welcoming more editors, but as I'm not actively looking for editors, had not done so. I did go ahead and edit the main page with a link to a contact information page, though, and a note on there saying that users joining without consulting Michele [myself] first will be blocked.

Thank you for getting in touch! --Michele/choircutie 21:11, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

Hoping you can help![edit source]

Hoping you can help![edit source]

Hello, I am hoping you might be able to help me, though, I am not sure if you can or if you are the right person to be asking. So, in developing my own ShoutWiki page (which is being used as a database for an online RPG game), I have attempting to install multiple templates from the main Wikipedia. However, some several templates, the "Show" / "Hide" option is no longer working; the template stays uncollapsed, and it's causing a bit of issues. Is there something within the coding that is not allowing this to work properly? It used to, but it no longer does.

Also, is there a why to bypass the "#invoke" code? I've been able to re-write the template setup on multiple templates, but there is one in particular that is simply not working out. MusicNation (talk) 13:37, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

The main reason is that unlike ShoutWiki, Wikipedia uses Lua via Scribunto (the infamous #invoke command). If you want to use Wikipedia templates, you should use the history page and find the last version before the transfert on Lua. --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 21:39, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
We had Scribunto on some wikis for a bit, but it was the cause of the mass of 503s we were having. Re-enabling the extension with a fix is high up on my ToDo list after a few other company related matters. --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 22:18, 15 March 2016 (UTC)
Do either of you know when Lua was installed? I wondered why things stopped working when they used to (mainly the "Show" / "Hidden" template), and gosh, those 503's were so troublesome! MusicNation (talk) 01:02, 16 March 2016 (UTC)
It was only installed on a couple of wikis, and I doubt the issue with Show/Hide is related. Link me to an example please? --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 22:28, 17 March 2016 (UTC)

I can install skin of oasis, in my computer or is possible use skin Oasis in Shoutwiki? --Pastelerohelper92 (talk) 06:15, 11 April 2016 (UTC)

TOC, Namespaces, and HTML[edit source]

Hi, I sent emails to support@shoutwiki.com, but no replies so far. So writing here. My wiki is bkdrum.shoutwiki.com. I need these namespaces: তালিকা, সময়রেখা, বই, প্রবন্ধ। It's okay if you do not include the corresponding talk pages. And could you please add this to localsettings.php: $wgDefaultUserOptions['numberheadings'] = 1 ? And is it at all possible to allow html in my wiki as it is private? If it is not possible could you at least allow the "img" and "iframe" tags? I really need these two. Nothing risky will happen for these as I am the only member of the wiki at present, and #members will not exceed 10, everyone is personally known to me. -- Muhammad2017 (talk) 08:09, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi Muhammad2017, apologies for the delay! We had some DNS issues (which are now resolved) with the support ticket site, preventing us from accessing it and thus replying to emails sent to the support address.
I can add the namespaces once you provide the talkspace names — MediaWiki mandates that all namespaces must have a corresponding talkspace equivalent, even if it doesn't really make any sense (i.e. Forum & Forum_talk:); once you've done that, I'll also add the $wgDefaultUserOptions definition in.
As for allowing raw HTML, I discussed it with Lcawte, our Chief Technical Officer, and we both came to the conclusion that this is something that we do not want to allow on ShoutWiki. Sorry about that! Do note that you can embed images from external sources into your wiki once you've whitelisted the domain(s) in [[MediaWiki:External image whitelist]]; see the MediaWiki.org page for $wgEnableImageWhitelist for details. --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 11:43, 10 May 2016 (UTC)
Hi, thanks. I understand the html issue. The namespaces and talk pages should be: তালিকা, তালিকা_আলোচনা, সময়রেখা, সময়রেখা_আলোচনা, বই, বই_আলোচনা, প্রবন্ধ, প্রবন্ধ_আলোচনা. And another thing I have the domain bkdrum.com that I want to use with this wiki. I know this page, but adding the cname record is not really working. In my provider I need to "HOST", and "POINT TO" information and I don't know how to make it work. Please help. -- Muhammad2017 (talk) 12:09, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

Why I'm Here? To be explained...[edit source]

Hey, Jack, I'm writing to you #1 as an apology for something I did back in 2012 that I probably shouldn't have done because you guys do not have the resources to put up with things like Google does, and #2 to...I guess, give an update on where I'm at in life and recent projects involving the Vanilla Monaco fork I've been hacking at. I've come a long way since I started screwing around here back in June 2012, and I honestly didn't expect you to still be here when I ran by yesterday.

#1: My Apology/Confession[edit source]

I apologize for using resources under multiple accounts. I was 13, almost 14 when I first came by here. I'm 18, and have come a long way. Let me introduce myself using my real name, Gage Morgan. I have used other usernames as separate aliases, such as Gerbilman, 17morgm, and this one, which is the only one I have access to. It's all the same person. I am looking back now, thinking about it, and I kinda feel bad now for wasting resources. I realize (now) that you guys put the two wiki limit on there for a reason. I don't even want to know the hell it must be to set up a server and get it connected a registrar...but, anyway, that's my confession, and I just want you guys to know that I'm sorry for being such a pain in the rear back then.

I contacted you guys too often. I really did. You are here for serious stuff, not the BS I put you through. So, unless you respond to this, I will not bug you. However, I just turned 18 on the fifth of this month, and I have no idea why, even back then, I was using a fake name. I'm not sure why I was paranoid back then, either. I guess the thoughts my parents put in my head were the usual Republican fear-mongering that happens in the US.

I also want you to know that you probably did the right thing by turning me down on that internship I kept bugging you about, because although I'm a bit more qualified now, I was not in any way then.

That's my confession, and my apology. I felt I needed to take responsibility for that, considering I have shared hosting at DreamHost that I have to manage for my startup (we're developing a new operating system) and I understand now what you meant by "hosting ain't cheap." If shared hosting costs that much, I'm not even gonna ask what VPS is.

#2: The Update On Life (My Contribution To Society)[edit source]

I am now ready for the second part. I am not fluent in PHP, so object-oriented PHP is not necessarily my forte, but I have done my best at giving the dantman-Haley-Arcane Monaco port a ShoutWiki-esque Community box. It's definitely not the best, but it's a start. I used the News extension for the recent changes in that box, and I would definitely appreciate any pointers to make it better.

My mock-up of ShoutWiki's Community box in Monaco (it ain't perfect!)

As you can see, the port itself was modded (those sideboxes look like crap when left to their own devices, had to mod CSS) and that I was able to figure out the username (partially).

MediaWiki's codebase is the definition of PHP hell, IMO. I've also worked with WordPress, which I'd go out on a limb and say is the most beautiful piece of PHP code I've ever worked with.

The issue I have with MediaWiki is that I cannot figure out a clear, clean (non-hackish) way of doing things. Things like:

   if (user is logged in) {
Welcome back, (retrieve username following conditional)
   } else {
Show that elegant green button that the monaco port doesn't have for some reason
   }

I know that you guys haven't released your implementation of Monaco, but I also am aware that Wikia doesn't currently use a "stock" version of Linux on their servers. I found a list of mods to the Linux kernel on their company GitHub, so there's that.

Also, don't know how to format the "Latest Activity" box to show just the page names, usernames, and just the simple hours/days etc. that you guys have.

I am considering doing an edit to the way that WikiEditor works, because Monaco is falling apart on vanilla, and signs of age are showing here as well, take a look at the "MORE WIKIS" button on the top of your implementation. But back to WikiEditor: I want to re-theme it to look like Monaco, and use Monaco sprites. The version (if any, because I have no idea if PHP and whatnot will work with me; I didn't think the redneckery image here would work either, but it did) will be on my current GitHub. Speaking of, after doing a bugfix the code is available here: https://github.com/MGageMorgan/monaco-port.

The bits are out there. If you are this far, Jack, I thank you for taking the time out of your day to hear me out. Not many people actually read until the end because (millennials). Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, DJ m0m0 (talk) 12:10, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

AbuseFilter 1 edit[edit source]

Special:AbuseFilter/history/1/diff/prev/8 seems to handle the extra space that was at the end, according to Special:AbuseFilter/test/1. --Saftzie (talk) 07:18, 11 August 2016 (UTC)

Awesome, thank you! Looking at the recent changes page as well as various logs, I see that you've been busy keeping Hub nice and tidy — please keep up the good work, your contributions are appreciated. :-) --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 23:14, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
I think it's worth setting $wgAbuseFilterAnonBlockDuration to something like a year or maybe even less, instead of defaulting to indefinite. Anonymous sources are usually dynamic addresses, so blocking forever doesn't yield much benefit. Even if they're static, for example an open proxy, they'll probably end up on a blacklist sooner or later. --Saftzie (talk) 18:44, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Need help, can't edit my own wiki[edit source]

Jack,

Thanks for taking the time to read this and help. I uploaded my wiki here a while back and just started getting back into it (the game it's for just picked up in activity again) trying to edit some pages and come to find out, I'm not Sysop, admin or even beureacrat on my own wiki. If you could help me out, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Taladan@gmail.com Taladan 9 September 2016‎, 01:46 (UTC)

What is the name/subdomain of the wiki? --Saftzie (talk) 02:21, 9 September 2016 (UTC)
The subdomain is wintersedge.shoutwiki.com —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Taladan (talkcontribs) 03:17, 9 September 2016‎ (UTC). Please sign your posts with --~~~~!
I can't say much. I can see it was "created" 18 Dec 2012 (probably restored, since the main page was created in 5 Nov 2005, and it looks like an original import took place 17 May 2007). There doesn't appear to be a founder, but Jack Phoenix is the only bureaucrat atm. There are 4 other administrators, none of them are you. In fact, there are no contributions by you on that wiki. Is there any chance you edited with another account? Other than a lot of spam, there's been no activity there since Feb 2008. --Saftzie (talk) 04:01, 9 September 2016 (UTC)
Yes, the original admin account that I had on the wiki was named Swift. I tried logging in to the wiki using that name, but apparently I wasn't able to (it's usually taken up pretty quick on most websites) so I apparently fell back to my Taladan login (which is my email name as well as what I typically use online) I've got the original backup of the database here on my LAN, just can't figure out why the shoutwiki import never had my account in there as Swift or, when I set it up on my Taladan account it didn't set me as at least beareucrat if not admin. I'm not sure what needs to be done from this point? Thank you so much for taking time to help! -- Taladan 00:32, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
Imports of data don't automatically create accounts or grant privileges. This info should help Jack, though. --Saftzie (talk) 04:13, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
Hi Taladan,
I've made you a steward of the site.

Changes on the Shadowhunters wiki[edit source]

Greetings! My wiki is fairly new but I would like to request a couple of things for the wiki: http://shadowhunters.shoutwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page

  • The creation of two custom namespaces: "Film" and "TV".
  • The switch to the Vector skin.
    • In line with this, I was wondering if it's possible for you to change the background or font color of some of the windows (like the ones at the bottom of the edit screen and when you go to Preferences) where the background is white while the text is gray with yellow links, making it hard to read. Is this something that I can/must request or something I can change with the CSS?

Additionally, I would like to ask: are there limitations to the free version of wikis, aside from the presence of ads? Or please redirect me to a page that details this (I've tried looking, I swear).

Thanks in advance! ~ redwall64 20:05, 17 September 2016 (UTC)

Jack, or one of the other staff, would have to be the ones to create namespaces and change your default skin. If you want to change colors or fonts, those are things you would do in s:w:shadowhunters:MediaWiki:Common.css or, possibly, s:w:shadowhunters:MediaWiki:Vector.css once Vector is your default skin. What do you mean by "limitations," though? --Saftzie (talk) 22:02, 17 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks! My two requests still stand. As for limitations, I mean things like size of the file storage particularly—like one of the hosts I canvassed before choosing ShoutWiki had a 100MB limit for unpaid sites, and free users can't change the favicon, things like that. Thanks again. ~ redwall64 03:15, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
There is a 100Mb limit for the size of each file upload. You can change the favicon. If any individual wiki pushes the limit of the farm's capacity as a whole, I suppose there might be a maximum capacity policy implemented, but there isn't one now. ShoutWiki wouldn't make a very good cloud storage facility, anyway. MediaWiki really isn't built for that. In the meantime, there's no limit on the number of pages or the number of files you can have. --Saftzie (talk) 03:44, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. Any idea if Jack is active or should consider asking someone else soon? ~ redwall64 04:08, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
He's active, just not necessarily daily. --Saftzie (talk) 04:26, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

We're gonna need a bigger boat server farm[edit source]

This looks like it's gonna turn into a mass-exodus. Any plans for dealing with all the users emigrating from Wikia Fandom powered by Wikia the Wikia-Dot-Com Wiki Hosting Service powered by Fandom powered by Wikia? AOTCP69zhere (talk) 00:54, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

This particular announcement doesn't affect much, in all honesty. We've got plans for expansion should we need them. We know what's got to be sorted, operations wise, and we know what is going to make our life difficult. Although I don't agree with the mass-exodus assessment, there are a few extra steps that I'll be making sure we get in place to ensure it doesn't immediately kill the service. The main one being finally getting around to putting some limits into Special:Import - users like to try and import massive wikis themselves, and Special:Import isn't designed to do that. There have been occasions where this has significantly disrupted the service for others. I'm also going to be paying closer attention to the import requests, and make sure they get done quicker than most currently are. --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 06:26, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

Last message[edit source]

Um, I don't know what any problem there is for me to deal with. The complaints I saw had to do with people not liking the Bad Webcomics Wiki to begin with, e. g. "How dare you trash-talk my webcomic!" Or am I missing something? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Long Tom (talkcontribs) 04:11 January 16, 2017. Please sign your posts with --~~~~!

Hi Long Tom, thanks for your swift reply! I'll have to admit I didn't look too closely at the reported problems, just took a look at the total amount of them reported from the Bad Webcomics Wiki. On s:w:badwebcomicswiki:Special:ProblemReports you'll see a list of those problems. By clicking on the little magnifying glass icon in the "Problem ID" column you can expand each entry to show what the user who submitted the problem report wrote.
Then on the rightmost column, titled "Actions", you can choose what action to take. Clicking on the green "OK" button marks the report as fixed; clicking on the red X marks the problem as "closed" (sounds like this is what you'll be wanting for most of these issues); clicking on the warning icon marks the report as "needs ShoutWiki staff help" (for software bugs and other such things not directly related to your wiki's content); the default state is "pending", which is represented by the rightmost green arrow icon.
Based on a quick glance at the reports, some have probably been fixed (related to old vandalism/spam), some content-related ones might require attention from an experienced contributor of the wiki (#184?) and some appear to be outright junk, but I'll let you be the judge of that.
Again, thank you for such a swift reply and let me know if you need any assistance, whether it's with this or any other ShoutWiki-related matter! :-) --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 04:55, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

Semantic MediaWiki[edit source]

Hi Jack,

I've recently sent two emails to ShoutWiki requesting the Semantic MediaWiki extension to be enabled on casualty.shoutwiki.com but both messages have been blocked by the spam filter. I have tried using my email client to manually email the support address but I'm not sure whether or not it got through since, unlike when using the contact form, you don't receive any email in return.

Just in case it hasn't, please could you enable Semantic MediaWiki on the Casualty Wiki? Thank you in advance. Schr00dinger (talk) 14:58, 14 February 2017 (UTC)

The Wiki[edit source]

Hello there everyone, My name is Freezeblade7997. I am here to discuss my problem with this wiki. You may also know me as SOMBRASUPPORTER2000

My problem with this wiki is your community, reviews and how you treat fandoms. I know you guys probably have a normal or a stressed life and wants things done, but this is not how you do it. Directly insulting fans of anime or furries shows that you all don`t care what happens aslong as you get all the laughs...until you get laughed at.

For an wiki that "Promotes mocking webcomics and insulting fandoms to a pretty big degree" You all seem to be sore losers. Whenever someone has an opinion on doesn`t like something, you guys attacked immediately and even ban users. The worst part of all of this is that, most of your users don`t care at all whatever happens and will directly insult whoever JUST by what fandom they are or what they like...a new low.

I tried to remove some of these reviews because they were complete BS (Twokinds review for particular, haven`t you checked on how most of these people view this great webcomic?) No, because you`re all more interested in roasting and insulting viewers, artists and overall...work.

I`m not trying to say all of you are jerks or something, I know for sure some of you are good, even great people...but my one request is to more nicer against other artists, they have lives, they are putting time and effort into these things (Ok some are garbage, like Angel Warrior, Billy the HEretic and the milk goddess) But still, don`t discriminate them just cause they have furry elements or an anime artstyle because that`s not only stupid and you`re directing to a fandom, but you`re also showing that you call it bad, even awful JUST because of these elements.

I hope you understand that i`m not trying to insult this wiki with this message, this is just my own personal opinion of it, I hope you understand of my problems and to improve on them.

Thank you for reading

Freezeblade7997/SOMBRASUPPORTER2000

I will not attack this wiki anymore after this message. I promise.

New to ShoutWiki, need to know how to color the Nimbus skin[edit source]

I have prior experience in creating and editing wikis, but I want my private wiki to have a good color scheme. The CSS tutorials from what I've seen are a bit overwhelming. Deleting a Wiki[edit source]

Hey, Jack.

I've just created an account and I'm using it for the first time. I created a Wiki as an test and all I need is to delete it. Can you help me? Not delete the page, but the Wiki itself in my control panel. Is it possible? I haven't found any delete button whatsoever.

Thanks!

What the **** are you doing with the servers?[edit source]

Because ShoutwikiHub is the only wiki that works for me. The other ones are redirecting to a 503 error page that looks like something from the early days of the Internet, when it was just a few computers connected together in a building in Switzerland. AOTCP69zhere (talk) 22:40, 20 July 2017 (UTC)

Deletion of http://interline.shoutwiki.com/wiki/.[edit source]

Greetings. How do I go by totally getting rid of (deleting) our Wiki? http://interline.shoutwiki.com/wiki/. It is out of date an no longer used but do not want the data out there anymore at all. Most pages are older and mass delete function does not work, as it does only for new pages, which of course we havent entered any in while. We just want to have it blown away altogether and does not need to be backed up. If you can just delete it on your end that is authorized and I ask that you or team do so. Plusieurs problèmes sur mes wikis[edit source]

Salut Jack!

First, sorry for this very long message, but I really need help, and I couldn't find it elsewhere. Maybe you could make it collapsible if it's too long and visually annoying?

2. Extension Restric access by category and group.

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Restrict_access_by_category_and_group

3. L'extension semantic wiki extension,

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Semantic_MediaWiki

4. namespace manager

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Namespace_manager

5. Widgets

6. SimpleCalendar

7. CSS

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:CSS

http://www.shoutwiki.com/wiki/Forum:GoogleDocs4MW

--PERCE-NEIGE (talk) 23:36, 28 May 2019 (UTC)

Bonjour PERCE-NEIGE,

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:MultiBoilerplate

Translate: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Translate

--PERCE-NEIGE (talk) 22:49, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

--Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 20:45, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

Advertising on the left side of the Aurora skin[edit source]

Hi Jack,
There is a small issue with the advertising on the left side of the Aurora skin. The ad overflows on the wiki's content zone. I found a solution with the following CSS code in the MediaWiki page MediaWiki:Aurora.css like here on Eureka Wiki

#menu-left {
     width: 11em;
}

I think it should be wiser to include it directly in the skin's source code.
Cheers! --LIMAFOX76 (talk) 11:46, 4 June 2019 (UTC)

Hi LIMAFOX76, thank you for the report & the patch! I've submitted and merged it against the upstream repository and deployed it on ShoutWiki. :-) Please let me know if you stumble upon any similar issues in the future! --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 20:45, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

Kieltenväliset linkit[edit source]

Kiitoksia.

mw:Extension:Thanks on jo esiasennettuna kaikkiin wikeihimme (ks. esim. s:w:fi.jonskupedia:Toiminnot:Versio tai minkä tahansa muun wikin Special:Version-sivu, esim. Brickipedian). --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 16:43, 9 June 2019 (UTC)
No niinpäs onkin.

hiccup.shoutwiki.com - this page not spam[edit source]

Hi. This page on my wiki isn't spam. Please don't delete any page I have created. Also, could you make my wiki so sign-ups are invite only and remove all users other than me? --Hiccup (talk) 19:56, 10 June 2019 (UTC)

Don't worry about the accidental deletion - its only happened once before and I get notified and can revert it, so its not really a big problem. Yeah I do have a lot of spam. If you could help me with that I'd appreciate it. Simply deleting all pages not made by me should clean it up. Thanks for for activating the invite feature - that should prevent any further spam. --Hiccup (talk) 15:15, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
It seems like I cannot make edits with lots of links in. It says: "Error: This action has been automatically identified as harmful, and therefore disallowed. If you believe your action was constructive, please inform an administrator of what you were trying to do. A brief description of the abuse rule which your action matched is: Link spam". Could you fix this too? --Hiccup (talk) 17:23, 12 June 2019 (UTC)
Thanks very much! --Hiccup (talk) 16:18, 13 June 2019 (UTC)

Protecting the entire Blogger Beware Annotated Wiki[edit source]

The Blogger Beware Annotated Wiki is fairly old and doesn't have many actual editors, but I like to visit it for nostalgia. Sadly, almost all of the recent edits are from spam bots creating new pages.

Can we try enabling this feature: Extension:ConfirmEdit for the whole wiki?

Thank you for your assistance. --GoosebumpsArt (talk) 17:10, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

@GoosebumpsArt: Indeed, we've noticed that wiki seems to be getting quite a bit of spambot traffic. ConfirmEdit is already enabled on all ShoutWiki sites per default (see also Help:Extensions), together with various other anti-spam measures. However, the default CAPTCHA used in ConfirmEdit on most ShoutWiki sites is the "blurry word" one (called FancyCaptcha); a far more effective one is QuestyCaptcha, which presents the user with a question that they must correctly answer for the edit/other desired action to go through. For example, on Brickipedia, the LEGO wiki, the questions are about LEGO sets, such as when (what year) a certain set was released, how many pieces a set contains, etc. — finding out the answer as a human being is easy enough even if you don't know much about the topic of the wiki, but spambots obviously cannot figure that out and thus they move onto a different, easier target, for sadly the Internet is ripe with wikis (and forums, blogs, etc.) with insufficient anti-spam measures.
If you can come up with at least 5 question/answer pairs, let us know and we'll happily enable QuestyCaptcha for the Blogger Beware Annotated Wiki! (Do note that answers are case-sensitive, so "this", "This" and "THIS", for example, are not the same thing, though it is entirely possible to have multiple correct answers for a question.) --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 17:14, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

Could you make my wiki private?[edit source]

Removing Spam accounts[edit source]

Spams and spam accounts have been a huge problem time and time again at Seikai wiki. So far deleting spam posts and blocking works fine. However, I'm still facing 50478 user accounts, most of which are obviously spam bot accounts. If possible I would like to clean out the user list from those and leave contributing members or those I know. So I would like to ask for admin rights to delete user accounts. Spams, logs, recent changes[edit source]

Taking care of lots of spams I've come across a few problem which needs addressing and hopefully will improve how future wikis/wikimedia engineswill handle this. As is I find the need and to be able check at greater time ranges for greater than offered by "Recent changes". It would be nice to have options to check for monthly ranges. The logs for deleting spam and blocking spammers is filling out the log and drowning out wiki relevant entries. It would be nice if those block/deleted spam related entries are visibly different. I understand they can't be removed as someone could inappropriately delete other things than spams. I'm thinking of like more indented so they can be identified by a glance. I don't want to turn the wiki into a private one. So it would be nice to have a way to enforce registry confirmation within a set time limit (since it could take some time) and also enforce a period of post ban for newcomers. Even a single day of delay should prevent spam. Almael (talk) 09:32, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

Hi Almael, thank you for your suggestions. As you know, spam is indeed an ongoing and ever-evolving issue, sadly.
Building a better, admin-oriented version of recent changes sounds certainly like something that'd be very neat to have, but I can't promise you anything else than to look into the matter.
For some simple, more concrete things we can do for you right away:
  • Setting a different, non-default value for [[mw:Manual:$wgAutoConfirmCount|$wgAutoConfirmCount and(/or) $wgAutoConfirmAge — on Jedipedia we've customized these so that not everyone who signs up ends up in the implicit autoconfirmed group, and thus we've restricted certain actions to the autoconfirmed group; should an obvious vandal sign up, we can easily block them well before they pass the autoconfirmed requirements.
  • Using QuestyCaptcha on the signup page — this basically killed spambot registrations on Brickipedia, the English-language LEGO wiki. Granted, no solution is perfect and in this case, the downside is that users wishing to sign up need to look up certain information on the wiki (if/when they don't already know it) to be able to answer the CAPTCHA question on the signup form correctly.
  • More and better AbuseFilter filters — AbuseFilter is a mighty powerful tool that enables local administrators to curb spam and other harmful edits, or just to disallow main namespace edits lacking a category, for example. The downside to AbuseFilter is that the extension indeed ships with no filters, and administrators like you must either import filters from another wiki or write their own. Given that AbuseFilter allows filters to be marked as private (admin-viewable, as opposed to public, which is quite literally world-viewable), not all filters are available for everyone to view on wikis like MediaWiki.org or the English Wikipedia. Oftentimes spam/vandalism-related filters are indeed marked as private to avoid exposing just what conditions are used to catch the bad editors.
Should you want to customize the autoconfirmed settings and/or enable QuestyCaptcha, please contact us and let us know the new values of the settings and for QuestyCaptcha, at least a set of five different questions and their answers (note that answers are case-sensitive). --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 22:24, 15 September 2019 (UTC)

Error message when attempting to load new wiki[edit source]

Hi, I started a new wiki called Q-Games Wiki (http://qgames.shoutwiki.com) about a small game company linked with Nintendo and Sony, but in the process of creating it I received an error message. I chose to import the starter elements, and I think the skin is the default one (dark like on the main Shout Wiki site). It's listed in the wikis I've created (according to this, I know there is a maximum of 5) but following the URL results in a "No such wiki" message. Can you try and fix it please? Thanks. Torchickens (talk) 16:19, 30 December 2019 (UTC)

The problem seems to have resolved. Thanks! Torchickens (talk) 16:28, 30 December 2019 (UTC)

Show/hide box toggler should be on the left in mobile view[edit source]

See the mobile view problem here:

Maybe the toggler CSS selectors are different in mobile view?

I also mentioned this problem here:

In the section currently titled: "Move toggle-link to the left, and adjust its margins". --Timeshifter (talk) 11:25, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

The problem seems to be coming from the jquery.makeCollapsible.styles mw:ResourceLoader module ([www.shoutwiki.com/w/resources/src/jquery/jquery.makeCollapsible.styles.less this LESS file], which gets compiled to valid CSS at runtime). Sounds like you'd want the float: right; around lines 96-105 to be instead float: left;. Of course the problem here with LESS is that you can't write LESS code to any onwiki page and expect it to work (at least yet), you need to write pure CSS instead...try this:
.mw-content-ltr .mw-collapsible:not(.mw-made-collapsible) th::before,
.mw-content-rtl .mw-content-ltr .mw-collapsible:not(.mw-made-collapsible) th::before,
.mw-content-ltr .mw-collapsible:not(.mw-made-collapsible)::before,
.mw-content-rtl .mw-content-ltr .mw-collapsible:not(.mw-made-collapsible)::before,
.mw-content-ltr .mw-collapsible-toggle,
.mw-content-rtl .mw-content-ltr .mw-collapsible-toggle {
	float: left;
}
Depending on the loading order you may need to make your custom selectors even more specific for them to cascade properly (e.g. span.mw-collapsible-toggle instead of just .mw-collapsible-toggle. Try it out and see how it goes! --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 11:23, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Thanks! After a lot of experimentation and clearing caches I figured out that adding span to mobile.CSS was enough by itself to keep the toggler on the left under all circumstances. For consistency I also added it to common.CSS, and the toggler is on the left still.
I tested on my Windows 10 desktop PCs and on an iphone X and an old Moto G3 Android phone using Android Lollipop (5.1). On Firefox and Chrome on the desktop PC. On Safari and Firefox on the iphone. On Chrome on the Moto G3.
See my detailed cache clearing instructions at the top of the mobile.CSS page: s:w:cannabis:MediaWiki:Mobile.css. On the desktop PCs I found it essential to click Ctrl-F5 on every page I was testing on Firefox. Or Ctrl-shift-r on Chrome pages.
I updated mw:Manual:Collapsible elements. See section currently titled: "Move toggle link to the left". --Timeshifter (talk) 07:16, 2 February 2020 (UTC)
Glad to hear that it worked for you! And thank you for updating the on-wiki documentation on MediaWiki.org! :-) All too often us developers in general tend to forget doing that and that's how on-wiki documentation ends up getting outdated. --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 11:19, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

Howdy from an old friend[edit source]

Hey Jack, remember me? It's been a while since our last chat; I tried reaching out via email a while back, but not sure if it got mixed up somewhere. Is there an email I can reach you at? I find emailing easier than IRC these days, though I'm open to IRC too if needed. Hope to get in touch soon! Cheers, Phil.e. (shocked I still remember my login and wiki syntax, man that takes me back to the good old days!)

Now that is a name I've not heard in a long, long time — great to hear from you! How are you doing?
My email addresses are easily found (and Special:EmailUser/Jack Phoenix indeed goes to my ShoutWiki email address), and despite email being my favorite form of "social media", I'm notoriously bad at checking them even on a semi-regular basis. Sorry!
That being said, you'd be correct in assuming I'm on IRC and it's probably the fastest way to contact me! Do ping me there at some point, would love to talk to you. :) --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 11:23, 1 February 2020 (UTC)

Hey just following up to say I sent ya an email. I think my username should be in the subject line. Cheers! Phil.e. (talk) 20:33, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

Wiki still off-line[edit source]

It's been a month since the failed Mediawiki upgrade and the Seikai wiki is still not available yet. I already sent an email to the support as well as irc call a while back so this is just a reminder if you don't mind. And since we are at it I would like to request a backup. My previous support calls for backups might have failed, too. I would like to have this done for sure this time, too. And please let me know where to find it. Thanks for your work. Almael (talk) 06:38, 19 June 2020 (UTC)

You got a reply to your ticket within a minute of being filed. This is probably the quickest we've ever replied to a ticket, however, you failed to respond and did not reply with the information we needed to process the ticket at the time. --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 22:28, 24 June 2020 (UTC)
I'm not in the habit of going digging through the databases to find information, but, now you've posted on wiki, I've managed to dig out the information I need. Loops has been disabled as it was the cause of the issue. You can have an XML + images dump of your wiki if you'd like (file a ticket), but, standing policy at this time is that if I generate that, it'll be because you're moving and the wiki will be deleted after 30 days. --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 22:34, 24 June 2020 (UTC)
I do not wish for the wiki to move or be deleted. The wiki had always been experiencing a lot of spam and vandalism over the years so having a save point backup is a mus have in my opinion. If that's how the policy is then I decline from asking for a backup. Almael (talk) 20:45, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
Anyhow, the wiki is kind of back but still no content can be accessed or show up. There are only blank pages. Almael (talk) 08:28, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

I always get an error when I make wiki[edit source]

i wanted to make a wiki for a friend (a phonicfriends wiki) but idk why, i want to make a wiki, but it brings up a database error. when will this be back up???? --Cuddly Rainbow Guardian (talk) 17:28, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

The CreateWiki extension has to be updated to match the recently-deployed update to MediaWiki. Last week staff said it should happen next week. --Saftzie (talk) 17:39, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
So it should be hacked out so its disabled... for some reason, the non-disabled version is still being held in cache for some people? --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 17:42, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

Creat a Wiki[edit source]

Good afternoon, and when will the creation of wikiproject be available. For more than a month i can not create. -- Vladimir Makarov (talk) 15:32, 26 November 2020 (UTC)

The wiki creation wizard will be back online once we've upgraded to MediaWiki 1.35. (I do expect it to be a bit flaky initially, though, but hopefully this time around we can sort out the issues without data loss and without having to take the tool entirely offline.) --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 18:17, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

Hey dude...[edit source]

is there a way you can get the wiki update out with out wiping the site data of fucking up the site, cause I wanna start creating some wikis...

also see if you can cut out the Wiki making limit on the site too. User:Viril.Feline.Wyyzrd/sig

A lot of behind-the-scenes work has gone into making the 1.35 release as stable as possible, given the constraints. Regardless, I fully expect there to be some minor hiccups; the bigger issue is probably applying the database schema changes etc. beforehand (to the extent possible) to reduce wikis' downtime — nobody likes downtime!
Once the upgrade is done and we've confirmed all is working as expected, we'll be more than happy to reopen the Wiki Creation Wizard, trust me! (After all, ShoutWiki was the original "self-serve wiki creation site" that placed the power to create wikis into the users' hand, without requiring staff approval. That we had to take down a core feature of the site for such a long time really pained me to no end, and I certainly hope that we'll never ever encounter such a situation again!)
The wiki creation limit, however, will be staying. In our experience, it has been more than necessary. That said, it's not set in stone; if you have a reasonable request, shoot us an email at troppusmoc.ikiwtuohs and let's discuss it; you can also use the community forums here (but please do remember to "ping" us staffers to alert us to the discussion if you choose to do so) to present your idea. But for 90-95% of use cases and users, the five wikis per person is a reasonable limit. --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 23:54, 15 December 2021 (UTC)

Questions[edit source]

Will it violate the ShoutWiki's Terms of use and Content Policy if I want to create a Polandball Wiki?--铁桶 (Talk) 01:50, 17 April 2022 (UTC)

Humor and commentary on international politics are not inherently prohibited. What you do with them might be. It depends on what you do. Be aware that ShoutWiki's wiki-creation tool is down right now, however. There have been no concrete estimates for when it will be back up. --Saftzie (talk) 19:41, 17 April 2022 (UTC)
OK, got it. One more question, can ShoutWiki support Portable Infobox?--铁桶 (Talk) 15:00, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
I don't think it would, but sadly Google may have a different opinion. Usually their complaints have been about different type of content, but they're unpredictable as ever.
As for PortableInfobox...it seems fascinating and I'm glad to see that the current fork of Wikia's original implementation is still very much actively maintained and developer. So much, in fact, that it requires MediaWiki 1.37+, which is considerably newer than the 1.35 (LTS) version we'll be upgrading to. So I guess the answer is "in the future? Maybe and hopefully; but right now? No.". --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 15:09, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
Once upon a time, Wikia/Fandom decided to "stabilize" on mw1.17. I noticed recently that they're running mw1.33 (with all sorts of customizations). --Saftzie (talk) 16:00, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
It was actually 1.19 ;-) The old, apparently now obsolete, still public Wikia/app GitHub repo is based on MW 1.19; the "Unified Community Platform" (UCP), based on MW 1.33 is proprietary, which is very sad. Last I checked they're working towards upgrading 1.37. It's of course always a pleasure to see sites like Wikia or wikiHow realize that hacking core isn't the way to go, but it does make me wonder how come it took both sites/companies so long to do that...not to mention that neither one has embraced open development. wikiHow still at least claims to provide a copy of their source on request. --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 18:59, 23 April 2022 (UTC)
May ShoutWiki add ManageWiki(Miraheze) in the future? Personally, I would like ShoutWiki to open up more customizable options.--铁桶 (Talk) 17:18, 21 May 2022 (UTC)

This is with regards to ShoutWiki Hub:Wiki Adoptions#Bad Webcomics Wiki I would like to be able to actually promote new mods, if this is ok? --Webkilla (talk) 18:20, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

Because of the adoption, you are now a Steward on the Bad Webcomics Wiki. That gives you the ability to do pretty much anything else. "Mod" is not a role that exists on the wiki. If you mean Administrator, Steward and Bureaucrat already have the ability to create Administrators. --Saftzie (talk) 20:14, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

Spreadsheet/Form[edit source]

This is a general question. Is it possible for the wiki to create and use functional spreadsheets? By functional I mean able to program math functions into cells so the spreadsheet can provide services to math problems. For example providing calculation service for the properties of a circle in an article about circle. Or if not alternatively the ability to bind a spreadsheet like from GoogleDocs. I understand there's a security risk when for example Javascript is used so this idea might require some new separate implementation with restricted scope. Also this will need something like a reset button and calculate button. Almael (talk) 15:01, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

I've looked around more and found a topic on forms which would fit my needs: [3] However, it looks like a customization rather than a simple extension. Almael (talk) 21:47, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi. I'm an editor of Tiresome Wikis Wiki. Can i get confirmed so i can create a new wiki please? Thanks. CJWorldGame32125 (talk) 11:28, 13 November 2022 (UTC)

ShoutWiki's wiki creator is currently broken. It's supposed to be fixed when ShoutWiki upgrades to 1.35. A member of ShoutWiki staff has confirmed that the upgrade is almost ready, but there's still no ETA on when it'll happen, or maybe it's already started and we don't know. Hello, i have a question. When is the upgrade to 1.35.0 going to finish? Is it close? CJWorldGame32125 (talk) 14:48, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

I asked that same question a couple of months ago. A member of ShoutWiki's staff has confirmed that the upgrade is almost ready, but I still don't know when it'll be finished. Tali64^2 (talk) 22:10, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

FighterMortalHyper needs to be globally blocked from all wikis on ShoutWiki[edit source]

There's this user called "FighterMortalHyper" who's been causing serious problems such as harrassing and insulting other users including me, removing content that I write about criticizing him without any rhyme or reason, edit warring, adding misinformation to pages, and, worst of all, creating sock puppets and IP accounts to evade his bans.

Here are the contributions he's done on various wikis where he's been causing so much trouble: http://weirdcyclopedia.shoutwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions/FighterMortalHyper&mobileaction=toggle_view_desktop http://tiresomewikis.shoutwiki.com/wiki/Special:Contributions/FighterMortalHyper http://www.shoutwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions/FighterMortalHyper&mobileaction=toggle_view_desktop

Here are also anons he used to not only evade his ban, but also bully me and DarkMatterMan4500 on Weirdcyclopedia: http://weirdcyclopedia.shoutwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions/2600:2B00:7951:D000:290D:AFFB:877A:AF27&mobileaction=toggle_view_desktop http://weirdcyclopedia.shoutwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions/2600:2B00:7951:D000:B910:FE3D:442:6895&mobileaction=toggle_view_desktop http://weirdcyclopedia.shoutwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions/2600:2B00:7951:D000:9413:5B4E:7654:77F1&mobileaction=toggle_view_desktop http://weirdcyclopedia.shoutwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions/72.49.33.237&mobileaction=toggle_view_desktop

And here are a couple sockpuppet accounts FighterMortalHyper used to evade several of his blocks a year ago: http://weirdcyclopedia.shoutwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions/Leirdoman64&mobileaction=toggle_view_desktop http://weirdcyclopedia.shoutwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions/Leirdoman&mobileaction=toggle_view_desktop

So as you can see, FighterMortalHyper has been nothing but trouble on this site because of all the horrible things he's done as mentioned above and he refuses to learn from mistakes or change his ways, despite having been blocked several times in the past, so I don't see any value in welcoming him to ShoutWiki anymore.

I know you staff members of ShoutWiki don't really globally lock users the same way the stewards at Miraheze do, but I do know that you guys can globally block users from all wikis on ShoutWiki, and I'm hoping that you'll do that with FighterMortalHyper, because he's such a dreadful user and shouldn't be allowed on this site ever again. SuperStreetKombat (talk) 12:12, 14 March 2023 (UTC)

FighterMortalHyper is at it again, and he's still edit warring, and writing insults and uncivil comments: http://weirdcyclopedia.shoutwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions/2600:2B00:7951:D000:CC05:DB7C:F108:31A1&mobileaction=toggle_view_desktop

So I still think he needs to be globally blocked from all ShoutWiki wikis ASAP. SuperStreetKombat (talk) 10:13, 16 March 2023 (UTC)

Well? Are you going to block FighterMortalHyper from all wikis? SuperStreetKombat (talk) 9:37, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

I want to create a wiki but it's not letting me.[edit source]

The wiki I want to create is unbarney.shoutwiki.com but I keep getting greeted with the following message:

"You do not have permission to create this wiki, for the following reason: The action you have requested is limited to users in one of the groups: Staff"

Is something up? TheLoneStranger45 (talk) 23:24, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

The CreateWiki tool is still undergoing extensive testing before it's opened up to the public. I don't know when that will be. Tali64^2 (talk) 14:52, 29 March 2023 (UTC)

A small question[edit source]

How I can rename my account? Пина Клон (talk) 15:31, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

You can't. --Saftzie (talk) 20:33, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

Say something about the recent request for adoption of Rotten Websites Wiki?[edit source]

Hello. I'm just a nobody. All I wanted to ask is can you say something about the recent request for adoption of Rotten Websites Wiki? Tali64 and I made two requests for this, and the former made plans to fix the issues this wiki is currently suffering, such as the bureaucrat being inactive, constant bots, pages about people with no sources, and so on. All I want to ask is, could you respond please? I will link Tali64's discussion on possible adoption of this wiki and his plans. CJWorldGame32125 (talk) 16:18, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

It may take some time for Jack to respond; he hasn't really been active onwiki, but is present elsewhere. Regarding the adoption request, Mar8122 (the bureaucrat of Rotten Websites Wiki) has denied my request for bureaucrat + admin on his talk page, stating that the wiki is "dead". There are three likely choices for what could happen now: 1) a Staff member grants my adoption request and declines yours; 2) neither of our requests are accepted, and the wiki might end up deleted; 3) I reach an agreement with Mar8122 and I get admin rights without adopting the wiki. I believe 2 is the most likely outcome, 1 is the second most likely, and 3 is the least likely. Tali64^2 (talk) 17:51, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
Let's just hope that the wiki doesn't end up like Weirdcyclopedia. SuperStreetKombat (talk) 2:02, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

Table header cell diagonally split not supported[edit source]

I tried to create a table cell that's diagonally split but as it turns out "Template:Diagonal split header" is not supported. An example can be found at [5]. I think it would be nice if that's available as per standard. Or at least on the Seikai wiki. So please make this feature available. Almael (talk) 13:32, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

You can just copy the template to your own wiki. --miki-- (talk) 14:26, 2 August 2023 (UTC)
Done and working. Almael (talk) 05:23, 2 October 2023 (UTC)

Version 1.4 of mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Tabs[edit source]

Hi! Can you please add version 1.40 of mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Tabs to heroes.shoutwiki.com --imahero 00:34, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

Also why is webp banned? --imahero 07:45, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
Also, my special help pages report to have been cached since "07:57, June 5, 2021" why isn't that updating? --imahero 18:15, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
Also, my site tries to go to http:// sometimes. Can you turn off http:// for my wiki? --imahero 18:20, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

@Imahero:

  1. No. We've had a way more efficient way of creating tabs since forever, see Help:Tabs.
  2. It's not really explicitly banned, it's just not whitelisted, and if something isn't whitelisted, it's basically...banned. Looking at the manual, it does look like WebP got whitelisted a while ago. Interesting. I'll talk to Lewis about this.
  3. That's a side effect of having miser mode enabled (which is basically a must for slightly larger wikis or sites like ShoutWiki which host many wikis). As a bureaucrat, you can manually refresh the special pages via Special:RefreshSpecial on your wiki. (I've done this for your wiki now.) Do note that you'll probably want to refresh the pages in smaller batches as opposed to trying to refresh them all at once; as your wiki grows, pages like Special:WantedPages become "hotter" and trying to refresh several "hot" special pages at once may fail. (Basically, the more results a database query returns, the longer it'll take for the overall process to complete and if it takes too long, it hits timeouts and thus the processing gets halted automatically.)
  4. HTTPS rollout is progressing, but it's not yet fully done. I assume we'll have HTTP redirect to HTTPS once it's fully done.

Is it possible if I could create a wiki?[edit source]

The wiki is named "Bill Jensen Wiki"; which is about a YouTube streamer who occasionally gets trolled a lot. We were on FANDOM before, however, FANDOM took down the wiki. I still have a wikidump of the wiki. LuaGunsX (talk) 02:17, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

Oh yeah, and also, here are the wikidumps in question; https://archive.org/details/billjensen_pages_full.xml.7z LuaGunsX (talk) 02:21, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

I'm not quite sure why ShoutWiki would want to host a site that has been removed by FANDOM and which obviously sounds very problematic. --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 11:14, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

Spams and possible Login problem[edit source]

  • So there's been a massive spamming going on lately at seikai.shoutwiki.com again. The spammers usually register and create new pages that include spam links. The usually process I do is block them and then mass delete the pages. But this is taking too long due to back and forth communication. So I would like to suggest a new option that would allow you to tick off from a list of new users within a certain edit/select-able time range (this is to allow moving to different times periods) to block them en mass with the same blocking settings and at the same time including an option for mass deletion of their "contributions".
  • It seems automatic-timeout-logout might be creating some login problem. As I was waiting for the wiki to be updated, it appears I was logged out but this doesn't seem to have been applied globally leading to re-login problems. Things work again when I return to a previous page from where I would logout. I feel like the login error page might need a session ending button. It's better to be safe and consequential than a convoluted solution. I'm not sure if this is a problem. Just making sure to bring it up.

Almael (talk) 02:56, 26 June 2024 (UTC)

  1. Are you perhaps referring to something like the ProtectSite extension? We do offer that option, but it's not enabled by default. Let us know if you'd like it!
  2. Is the session issue still happening? Recently even on Wikimedia sites there have been session-related issues, though obviously whatever the root cause of those is is likely gonna be different than whatever might be going on here. They're quite the pain to debug. --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 11:14, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

Want to Creat wiki?[edit source]

Hello, I want to creat a wiki about "Assam" state and I was already practicing about it. You can see about this wayofassam with .com extension and I want to transfer this wiki here. Pjborgohain (talk) 14:19, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

You'll want to talk to User:Lcawte about that, though I don't think we've done wiki imports in a while, unfortunately. --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 11:14, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

aovideo / Extension:YouTube[edit source]

I'm having trouble getting aovideo tags to work. Any idea how to make this work? --imahero 04:37, 20 September 2024 (UTC)

archive.org/details/test_20240920

What a curious bug you found!
So the underlying issue is that like everything these days, Archive.org uses HTML5 — as they should! However, the YouTube extension (which implements the <aovideo> tag) uses ancient Flash-based (!) embed code, and Flash has been unsupported (outside PR China) since 2020.
Now, here's the gotcha: I'm not sure how embeddable Archive.org content is meant to be. In your example, the file name of the video is "test.mp4"; in an another quick example, the file name contained spaces (!) and had a different extension. But how would we derive these from the URL? That looks fairly impossible to me as it doesn't look like there's any consistency in the names, and the actual file name isn't advertised via the User Interface to the end-user. Sure, us tech-savvy folks have no issues firing up Developer Tools and poking around the source, but most regular users aren't going to be able to do that. :-(
Frankly, I'm kinda at a loss here as to what to do; the easiest and simplest "fix" would be to outright remove the broken code, but of course it'd be nice to preserve the option to embed video content from Archive.org...if the site only would support that. --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 11:14, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
Looks like there's a new updated video embed extension:
Extension:EmbedVideo_(fork)
Any chance we could add this one to shoutwiki? --imahero 20:55, 29 September 2024 (UTC)
EmbedVideo is truly the perpetual motion machine, isn't it? (On the other hand, it's great that people keep forking it, but personally I'm a much bigger fan of collaboration rather than forking, though I understand that sometimes the situation literally requires forking, but in the case of a single, stand-alone extension...that's probably not such a case.)
It's MIT-licensed, meaning we can use portions from it to fix the YouTube extension's currently broken support for archive.org media (mind you, as of now, archive.org is still suffering from a partial outage, so...). I'd much rather fix the existing one than code-review an entirely new extension and have it deployed. One big reason is the syntax: we don't want to break anything and EmbedVideo's syntax is different from YouTube's. And to mention the obvious: having two extensions with overlapping functionality wouldn't make much sense now, would it? After all, we have been very intentionally trying to cut down the amount of third-party extensions we support. --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 16:27, 19 October 2024 (UTC)

Is Shout wiki going downhill?[edit source]

@Jack Phoenix: I don't know but SSK Say that this site isn't great,But I want to know by you —The preceding unsigned comment was added by UVA (talkcontribs) 16:14, 2 October 2024‎ (UTC). Please sign your posts with --~~~~!

It's a free world and ShoutWiki's all about expressing yourself, so you are most definitely entitled to your opinion and broadcasting it (within the limits of our Terms of Use, of course).
That said, of course nothing is ideal. Wouldn't we all want a better world? I'm sure we would. Unfortunately, if you consider things like world peace, they're more of a goal—one we likely can never reach, sadly—rather than an accurate description of the current situation.
On ShoutWiki, many things are great, but of course there are some rough edges, like the aforementioned bug with the video embedding extension. As we become aware of these rough edges, we can try to do our best to smooth them out, but we will never be able to deliver a product which fully satisfies everyone all the time. That's just reality, I'm afraid. In the meanwhile, don't be afraid to express yourself freely on ShoutWiki and should you encounter some of the aforementioned rough edges, please let us know by emailing us (troppusmoc.ikiwtuohs) because we are unable to fix issues that we're not aware of. :) --Jack PhoenixShoutWiki Staff (Contact) 16:27, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
