Help with a few small things.[edit source]

 • Hi Jack!
There are a few things I am trying to figure out how to do on my wiki and was hoping you would help.
 1. This-

does not make quotes... Do you have your own template for that here? Or am I doing something wrong?
 1. Do you have a template for video embeding?
 2. When I try to make tables for example:
Like this
Like This Like This
Like This Like This
Like This Like this

Or pretty much anything else like

It works... But it's all white even though my wiki's skin isn't... I think it makes these things with the defult skin for some reason... How do I fix this?
I have been using This-

This

Instead, but I don't know how to make the button say what I want istead of "Expand" or make it not be in the center so it's kind of a pain in the ass...
Sorry for bugging you, hope you can help. Hazelludas (talk) 16:14, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi there,
For the quote template to work, you actually need to make the template. Your wiki doesn't currently have this template. You'd have to add the code yourself. If you need help with this, please ask.
You can change the colours of tables on an individual basis, or by creating a style using CSS. For more information on this, see Help:Tables on MediaWiki and Manual:CSS on MediaWiki. The tables guide should take you through how to make all sorts of changes to the tables, including aligning things. If you need any more help with tables, please contact me on my talk page. I am pretty good with tables and other MediaWiki code. ;) Thanks, ☆The Solar DragonShoutWiki Staff 16:37, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
 • I think I figured it out to some degree... Thank you! Hazelludas (talk) 19:31, 24 June 2013 (UTC)

Where's my wiki?[edit source]

Hey,

I found your site and wanted to use it for a personal wiki, I made one, didn't fill anything in, logged back out and now I don't know where to look for it. I don't see an option to see My wikis or something. Can you help me with this noob issue?

Thanks in advance!

Page namespace on Mariopedia[edit source]

I have a favor to ask you. Could you please rename the "page" namespace in Mariopedia to "article"? The text "page" is at the top-left corner of the article. That I would like to be renamed to "article". Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 17:45, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

As the main namespace does not have a prefix of any kind, it's not possible to rename it. However, you can change the "page" text to whatever you like by editing s:w:mariopedia:MediaWiki:Nstab-main; likewise, to edit the text displayed on the tab on category pages, you could edit s:w:mariopedia:MediaWiki:Nstab-category and so on. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 22:28, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
Excuse me, but do you know why it takes about a month for pages in Mariopedia to finally appear in the Google search engine? I've written an article about Diddy Kong Pilot (2001 version) back in June and when I search it, it doesn't appear on Google. Here is a list of articles from Mariopedia that do show up in Google. Most recent seems to be the Super Mario Bros. article. Gazlene the Pork Girl (talk) 17:49, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
That would be an issue with Google. Maybe this Webmaster Tools help page on Google might be of use to you; likewise, you may want take a look at Google's Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide.
As many guides, both Google's and third parties', recommend, you should ensure that as many external sites as possible link to content on your wiki; this will not only get you search engine visibility, but also new visitors and editors in the best case. :-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 10:08, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

I noticed SocialProfile seems to be fixed[edit source]

I remember you were working on that, my congratulations on fixing it.

I checked both Git and Subversion, and it doesn't seem your fixed version is available from the Wikimedia repositories yet.

Regardless, this post is to congratulate you on getting this extension fixed, and from what I can tell the functionality is completely fixed.

Thank you for all the hard work you put into fixing it.

Arcane (talk) 00:20, 7 July 2013 (UTC)Arcane

Thank you for the compliments, but unfortunately I had very little, if anything, to do with the patch in question. I did, however, clean it up a tad bit in terms of documentation and committed it to git yesterday: see this git changeset for details.
The rightful patch author is mw:User:Krusher, who posted the patch on SocialProfile's dicussion page on 18 June 2013. Please leave them a note saying that you're thankful for their work, I'm sure they'll appreciate it. :-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 19:55, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

category tree[edit source]

If I try to use categorytree extension to show all pages within a category, I see that only the first 200 pages are shown. From the related mediawiki page I see that this might be a version problem. But I guess shoutwiki already has the latest mediawiki. So, is there a solution to this problem, or if not can I expect a correction soon? Thanks in advance. (byt the way I am trying this in this page) -- Muhammad2017 (talk)

Hi, we deployed the latest version of CategoryTree last night, has this fixed the problem? --Lewis Cawte (talk) ShoutWiki Staff 09:34, 20 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello, already closed, but I can help, I should be the last, if not, I recommend putting and if you keep having this problem, reopen a new thread ~ ~ ~ ~ —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Nacion del fuego100 (talkcontribs) . Please sign your posts with --~~~~!

Community forum with threads that can be individually watchlisted[edit source]

In my opinion Shoutwiki really needs more of a community. I have a zillion questions, answers and ideas I could share, but I don't think a bunch of separate staff talk pages is what I am looking for. I never know which staff talk page to go to anyway. Plus I am interested in getting feedback from more than one person.

I don't know how long Shoutwiki will last. Wikkii.com is effectively gone from I read about the new owners not responding or maintaining the site. Its bandwidth is abysmal at times. So Shoutwiki is the last of the larger true MediaWiki wiki farms standing and functioning fairly well. Wikia has altered the MediaWiki look and feel so much and so badly that I no longer enjoy editing there. Though I still have many pages there that I don't have here.

So while Shoutwiki is around it would be great for us to be as creative as we can, and help each other do what we want with our wikis. I need lots of help, and I can help others a lot too. I have tens of thousands of edits on various wikis.

I don't have time though to monitor a free-flowing multi-thread forum as at the Village Pumps on Wikipedia. I want threads that can be individually watchlisted. As at Wikia. Wikia's forum software is under a CC license, I believe. So it could be used here. I prefer their old forums better, but either would be fine since they both have topic threads that can be individually watchlisted.

Since I watchlist individual threads I get emails when someone responds to the threads I am interested in. I don't check the watchlist regularly at the Shoutwiki Hub or at Wikia Central. So I like the fact that I get notified by email. I get notified by email about edits to this talk page, for example. --Timeshifter (talk) 16:03, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

I'll have to say that I partially agree. By partially I mean that there already is a community; we host 12526 (and counting!) wikis and plenty of people edit those wikis on a daily basis. For some reason many of these users don't seem to engage in community building outside their own wiki, as witnessed by the recent changes page on this wiki, ShoutWiki Hub, as well as the lack of comments on our blog posts — personally I'd think and hope that software changes and news would provoke some thoughts from our community, but apparently it doesn't seem to be so.
As for dealing with questions, issues, bug reports, etc., all staffers are equal — doesn't matter to whom you report it, we'll take care of it in any case. :-)
ShoutWiki isn't going anywhere and MediaWiki is an essential part of our core concept. While a wiki can be freely readable and editable and look just like Wikipedia, it doesn't have to, and that'a huge advantage for us.
Talk pages in MediaWiki are a like a blank sheet of paper. You can write on it, you can draw on it, you can trash it — both paper and talk pages are rather flexible. For some, this is a big plus; for others, it's a clear disadvantage. This has been attempted to solve with creative solutions like LiquidThreads, and more recently, Echo and Flow. Only time will tell how the newest attempts will 'fly', but LiquidThreads has failed for the most part. Partially because of the codebase and its structure, partially because of time and resource constraints, partially because of MediaWiki itself. Pretty much the same reasons led into us abandoning WikiForum — while a great idea itself, the codebase was buggy and the extension failed to attract sufficient outsider attention.
Some MediaWiki experts recommend a "proper" forum, such as phpBB (free and open source software) or Invision Power Board (proprietary commercial software) rather than trying to "reinvent the wheel" by integrating a forum into MediaWiki. Just like with native (to MediaWiki, that is) forum solutions, these have similar issues: authentication plugin support can be pretty poor or an auth plugin might not yet even exist, in which case it'd have to be written. In addition to that, only MediaWiki supports wikitext out-of-the-box. Wikia worked around this in the past by hacking phpBB core, but in the end, that wasn't such a scalable solution either.
Wikia's forum extension doesn't have a license indicated, which means it falls under the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 3, as noted in their LICENSE file. GPLv3 is a free and open source software license (just like Creative Commons licenses are, but CC licenses are for textual content as well as media files, whereas GPL and such licenses are for software source code).
But more than the license, the real issue with their forum extension is the dependencies: the Forum extension depends on the Wall extension (which in turn depends on a couple more Wikia-specific bits and pieces), the Nirvana framework, the ArticleComments extension (Wikia version), ...you get the idea.
Do I have a good, long-term solution for the issue presented here? No. Do I have suggestions? Why yes! Firstly, there's nothing from stopping anyone from creating a Village Pump-like free-flowing discussion area here. While not ideal, it's probably a better solution than the status quo. As for a stable, maintained, long-term solution, I believe it'd be the best to discuss with the relevant parties and come up with something that fits for (almost) everyone's needs. Right now Wikia has Message Wall and Forum, wikiHow has their own Vanilla forums (and a relevant authentication plugin to authenticate MW users against the Vanilla database), Wikimedia Foundation's working on Flow and Echo...and of course, there are the various third-party wikis, ranging from ShoutWiki wikis to independently operated sites using MediaWiki who all have different needs and goals. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 20:29, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
I like the old community forums at Wikia:
http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Forum:Index
Are they as complicated as you describe to set up?
I like the old forums because the individual thread pages use standard talk page format, and full wikitext editing capability. I much prefer that to the new forums that use some sort of LiquidThreads-type format. --Timeshifter (talk) 21:27, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
The old forums use the DPLforum extension, which is available on request. Would you like to have it enabled for the Cannabis Wiki? --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 05:32, 21 July 2013 (UTC)

(unindent). Thanks for the link. That is exactly what I am looking for, but not for the Cannabis Wiki. I updated the list of wikis there on the extension page (am waiting for my changes to be approved). The alphabetical links go directly to the main forum index.

I see version 3.4 of DPLforum extension listed in Special:Version for some of those wikis: Uncyclopedia, Wookiepedia, DDO, and Wikia.

The Cannabis Wiki does not get enough editor participation to need DPLforum. It gets many readers in the months just before the Global Marijuana March, and for a few weeks after. The rest of the year there is a good steady amount of readers. Most social interaction is on Facebook. I find many links there with their help.

I am interested in the DPLforum for getting more work done here on the ShoutWiki Hub. I think it would be a welcome addition, and that over time many people would use it.

By the way, I see some Ciencia Al Poder replies on the extension talk page: mw:Extension talk:DPLforum. --Timeshifter (talk) 00:27, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Timeshifter,
I've enabled the extension here on hub. Feel free to start creating Forum:Index and whatnot. (I would have but I won't have time to until tonight).--Cook879 ShoutWiki Staff talk 13:13, 24 July 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I started the page with a period. But I have no clue how to make this extension work. :)
Here are Wikia's intro pages (and wikitext) to some of their old forums using DPLforum extension:

http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Forum:Index?action=edit
http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Forum:General_Discussion

http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Admin_Central:Forum?action=edit
http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Admin_Forum:General_Questions
http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Admin_Forum:General_Questions?action=edit
May have to log in to see the wikitext source. I copied all the above pages.
I do not yet understand (from my cursory reading so far) how to implement anything from the DPLforum extension page. --Timeshifter (talk) 14:54, 24 July 2013 (UTC)

(unindent). It looks like Jack Phoenix worked on the forums. So I copied one discussion from here, and moved it to one of the new forums. Hope that is OK. Here is the forum page:

Yep, I indeed did work on the initial setup, but it seems that I forgot to notify you here (whoops!), since I've been busy with a zillion projects, both online and offline. Sorry! --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 14:25, 26 July 2013 (UTC)

Combine the Help desk and Watercooler[edit source]

I suggest deleting the Watercooler wikitext from Forum:Index. This would get rid of the Watercooler forum, thus combining the two forums into the Help desk. It would be easier to keep up with one forum instead of two. The single forum would also look more popular if there were twice as many posts in it by combining the posts that would have been posted in both forums.

More posts in a forum indicates increasing popularity. This matters in getting more people interested in helping out at the help forum. The Watercooler forum can always be returned later (maybe with a different name) if the Help desk forum becomes so busy that more room is needed, or if some topics need to be separated out to maintain the focus on help and sharing ideas at the help desk. --Timeshifter (talk) 02:31, 28 July 2013 (UTC)

I'm not totally sure if that's a good idea; in my opinion, it would make sense to keep the help desk and the forum for general/meta discussion separate...but I'd be interested in hearing others' thoughts on the matter before deciding either way. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 20:50, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
Ok. Can we change the name to something more understandable such as "General discussion"? The word "watercooler" is not something many people, especially non-native English speakers, would easily understand as a forum name. Also, can you add a "Forums" link to the sidebar: MediaWiki:Sidebar?
Also, there is no link from a topic such as Forum:Vector sidebar width, padding, and margins back to its forum index: Forum:Community help. Something like:
Forums: Index > Help desk
Some kind of transcluded template is needed. I solved the problem with this template:
desk - hope this is OK.
It added the forum index links to the top of this new thread:
Forum:Forum:Test of forum header template transclusion --Timeshifter (talk) 14:05, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
It's a wiki, so please be bold in editing it. ;-) If there's a change I don't agree with or someone else doesn't think it's a good idea, I'm sure that you'd be notified about it via your talk page — but I trust your judgement. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 15:22, 3 August 2013 (UTC)

Doubling of namespace in topic titles[edit source]

It seems that the problem is solved by using inputbox instead of createbox. See:

That's strange! I also tried to see what's causing the doubled prefix in CreateBox, but I was unable to figure that one out — and judging by CreateBox's talk page on MediaWiki.org, no-one else has been able to figure it out either. :-/ Ah well, I'm glad to hear that you've found a workaround that works and isn't too hacky. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 15:22, 3 August 2013 (UTC)

Category needs to be preloaded[edit source]

Well, I have been bold and created the following:

I have tested the creation of new topics. For example:

 • Forum:Testing creation of new topic - it works, but...

I now need to figure out how to preload a category on the individual topic pages. So that they show up on the forum indexes. See:

I think it has to do with this page:

I haven't had the time yet to figure it out. Help! Just looking at it makes my brain hurt. :) --Timeshifter (talk) 14:39, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

I figured it out. The categories are preloaded by these 2 pages using includeonly tags:
 • desk
 • discussion
The above 2 pages are preloaded by the following from inputbox in Template:Forumlist:
preload=Template:Forumheader/PAGENAMEE
See test:
 • Forum:Test to see if category added when creating new topic
Category:General discussion at the bottom of that page is what puts that topic in the forum index:
Awesome, thank you for all your hard work on improving and bugfixing the forums! :-D --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 09:48, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

ShoutWiki Hub forum links on all wikis[edit source]

On all wikis could you link to "Forums" or "Hub forums" or something similar from the "ShoutWiki messages" section in the sidebar, etc..

This would be the fastest way in my opinion to let people know of the forums, and to get people involved quickly in helping each other out. --Timeshifter (talk) 16:23, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion! I've committed the related code change to our NewsBox extension to our code repository — expect to see the change rolled out soon. ;-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 12:39, 10 August 2013 (UTC)
Great! I see the "ShoutWiki forum" link in the sidebar on my wiki, and in the sidebar here on the Hub wiki. --Timeshifter (talk) 06:53, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

It's great that you're interested in the wiki! However, I'm not sure what that needs staff rights needs to be done over there, since you already have administrator and bureaucrat rights. It has indeed been a while since Øla ke ase has edited, but their user rights aren't harming anyone and it seems possible to me that they may want to return to the wiki later on, so let's give them a bit of time. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 20:50, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

How do I use the database dump?[edit source]

 • In the instructions is says to click the "Update" button... But there is no such button on my statistics page. This is my wiki. I would also like to save all the images... The help page says I have to contact someone from the staff to do that.

Thanks in advance. Oddguy (talk) 09:15, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

You have to be logged in on the wiki to see the database dump link: "Current pages and history". For example; for the Shoutwiki Hub: Special:Statistics. Log in and log out to see what I mean at the bottom of the page.
The steward of your wiki initiates a new dump. The steward sees a link called "Generate a new dump". The date is for when the last dump was created. Anybody who is logged in can click the dump link and download the dump from that date.
New dumps can be requested by the steward no sooner than a week after the last dump was created. The dump is usually created instantly. I am a steward on a wiki, and that is how I know these things.
If you just want some pages, or all the pages, from a category on a wiki, you can use Special:Export on a wiki. It works great. Then use Special:Import on the wiki you want to import those pages too. --Timeshifter (talk) 11:42, 2 August 2013 (UTC)
Basically what Timeshifter just wrote above. There's also a help page available at Help:Database download and there's a link to this help page at the bottom of each wiki's Special:Statistics. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 15:22, 3 August 2013 (UTC)
 • Oh, I see. It didn't work because I wasn't using the account that has the steward status... Jack, could you do me a favor and make the account I am using now a steward too? I made the original account just to test how you site works but ended up having to rush making the wiki due to unforeseen circumstances and just used the wiki I set up as a test. Then I made this new account with the username people know me as... Also, what about a database dump for images? The help page says you need to ask someone from the staff to do that (by the way, thank for the help). Oddguy (talk) 10:34, 5 August 2013 (UTC)
Done and done — the image dump is available at our dumps site. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 09:48, 7 August 2013 (UTC)
 • Wow! Thanks man! You're the best. Oddguy (talk) 13:27, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

Problem creating dump[edit source]

Hi Jack, I take today's earlier Guru meditation as opportunity to ask again about the topic of this conversation, namely that we are not able to create database dumps for our wiki anymore and were told some time ago that there is a problem with larger wikis which needs fixing. I asked for a manual dump some days ago as our latest one is six weeks old now, but maybe that was missed as I got no response, so I'm asking here again. Any progress with the bugfix and, could you please manually generate a database dump for us? Thanks in advance, --CE (talk) 18:55, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

The dump generation system is (mostly) my code and I can say it definitely isn't my best code.
Refactoring the code has been and is in the plans, but it's one of those "easier said than done" things. On top of that, refactoring that particular extension most certainly isn't our only technical priority for Q3 & Q4/2013.
I'll see what we can do about manual dump generation in the meanwhile.
Finally, please allow me to apologize for the lack of a response! I guess that my colleague accidentally missed your question, which indeed can sometimes happen (despite our best intentions) when you have the "You have new messages on..." bar with ~twenty different wikis. As the old Latin saying goes, "errare humanum est". --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 01:01, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I can imagine it's not easy to keep track of all the local user pages. No problem. Well, this looks like we will have to go back to save single pages manually for the moment, right? Pity, such a nice feature. I see you created a large image dump for the person above but I guess it's not the size of the dump, but the number of operations which is a problem here? --CE (talk) 13:51, 26 August 2013 (UTC)
Aye, many of us prefer if the messages are left on our talk pages on this wiki; not only we see them, but other users will also be able to easily notice the question(s) and help you out with them. :) But I can totally see why people prefer leaving messages on their "home wiki"; after all, who wants to wander far away from home?
As for the actual dump of s:w:acloserlookonsyria, it's just been updated less than a minute ago. Enjoy! --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 13:22, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
Awww, great, thank you so much. Your link and also the way through our Special:Statistics page which still says "latest dump unknown" didn't help, but thanks to the information above I was able to locate it here. We've been quite busy babbling as it is almost twice the size it has been ~two months ago. Thanks again and hopefully you'll find a way to fix the problem (otherwise i'll have to annoy you again at some point when my folks get nervous). --CE (talk) 01:13, 29 August 2013 (UTC)
It's been a busy month for us and one with a lot of important research. There's some i'm confident unnecessary nervousness about the coming server move, so could you please generate another dump for us? --CE (talk) 19:09, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
"All wiki edits and pages are stored on a separate server which is unaffected and will run as usual, so you will not lose any of your hard work." You will not lose anything during the server move. We're too busy preparing everything to generate a dump right now for you I'm afraid. But you will not lose anything if the slim possibility that something goes wrong happens. ☆The Solar DragonShoutWiki Staff 19:16, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
Ok, understandable. Had to ask, though. Best success with the operation! --CE (talk) 20:30, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

s:w:users:User:♪♫ Fifi La Fume ♫♪ removed your administrator rights on 5 August (12 days ago) with the comment: "Using the site as more of an advertisement center than a wiki." Given that the user's last edits were on the same day, I'd say you give it some time — it's possible that they're busy in real life or somesuch.
In any case, the matter is strictly between you and ♪♫ Fifi La Fume ♫♪. Given that ♪♫ Fifi La Fume ♫♪ is the founder of that wiki and that there are no local policies about using administrator rights, they are allowed to grant or remove administrator rights as they see fit. You can talk to them about this, but it's not an issue that we, the ShoutWiki staff, can help with, since our terms of use or privacy policy haven't been violated. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 12:55, 17 August 2013 (UTC)

hello, sorry for the delay, but it is true that policies have not been violated, he / she took them unfairly, and said that the staff does not address it. For example wikivisión founder, OLA K ASE, died and I could not answer a message and maybe also the founder died beyond that wiki.en the latter case, could not give me powers or answer my message and worse: the wiki no bureaucrat would. RegardsNacion del fuego100 (talk) 06:22, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Automatically assuming that whenever someone is inactive, they must be dead is a rather bad idea. It's not unusual for people to be away and return whenever they have more time — in some cases, it might be a matter of days or weeks, but there have been cases where a person has been absent for over a year and then they've returned. Suffice to say that I'm not content in overriding the decision of the wiki's founder without hearing from them first. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 01:01, 24 August 2013 (UTC)

Add Google Calendar to wiki[edit source]

Hey Jack,

First off I want to say thanks for the help.

Secondly, I cannot find a way to embed a google calendar into shoutwiki. I've tried using the iframe and it doesn't process, and I was poking around and tried the <calendar> tag, but no luck either.

Any help would be appreciated.

Elmerg (talk) 16:34, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

The <calendar> tag was used by a feature that hasn't been active for years.
There isn't "out-of-the-box" support for embedding Google Calendars, like there is for embedding Google Docs/Drive documents, but I threw together a quick JavaScript-based hack in about ten minutes:
/**
* Quick Google Calendar iframe JS hack
*
* @author Jack Phoenix
* @date 24 August 2013
*/
var GoogleCalendarHack = {
	buildIframe: function( embedCode ) {
 var $iframe = jQuery( '<iframe></iframe>' );
 $iframe.attr( 'src', 'https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=' + embedCode + '%40group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America/Los_Angeles' )
 .css( 'border', '0' )
 .attr( 'width', 800 )
 .attr( 'height', 600 )
 .attr( 'scrolling', 'no' );
	},

	initialize: function() {
 if ( jQuery( '.googleCalendarHack' ).length === 0 ) {
 // Nothing to do here...
 return;
 }
 jQuery( '.googleCalendarHack' ).each( function() {
 GoogleCalendarHack.buildIframe( jQuery( this ).text() );
 } );
	}
};

jQuery( document ).ready( function() {
	GoogleCalendarHack.initialize();
} );
Paste the above code into your wiki's MediaWiki:Common.js and then use it on wiki pages like this:
<span class="googleCalendarHack" style="display: none;">Calendar ID</span>
Please bear in mind the following things:
 1. The above JavaScript code is entirely untested, but it should work (I hope!)
 2. It's an ugly hack
 3. Calendars rendered this way will not render in legacy browsers that don't support all of jQuery's features and obviously they also won't render when JS is disabled
 4. This code was built with the assumption that you want to share a Google Group Calendar; if this is not the case, the code probably needs some modifications. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 01:01, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
Hmm. thanks for the script. I installed it and it doesn't seem to display. I'm using the email address noted on GoogleCalendar in the Calendar ID area, but nothing. I have no real experience with JavaScript, so I have no idea where to look.
Elmerg (talk) 16:42, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
Maybe you could try asking the #mediawiki IRC channel on freenode for further advice? There are usually some skilled developers on that channel and with luck, someone just might be more familiar with Google Calendar than I am. :-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 17:31, 25 August 2013 (UTC)

admin this wiki[edit source]

Hello, you need to do to be admin of this wiki? and that I can help this wiki?--Nacion del fuego100 (talk) 09:27, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

You don't need administrator rights to help out on a wiki — you can fix typos, add/update information and help people out without needing admin rights for any of those tasks. :-) As ShoutWiki Hub:Administrators explains, admins on this wiki are appointed by ShoutWiki staff, but we haven't had a need for new admins since mid-2011. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 13:22, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

Widgets?[edit source]

Request to Close a Wiki[edit source]

Good Afternoon.

I would like a request to close the wiki I created at the link "http://pokemondawnofsouls.shoutwiki.com/" as the desired result is not what I originally planed.

Thanks. --JorgeAamelo (talk) 20:48, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

Shoutwiki forum[edit source]

The forum is not getting any participation. I think it needs to be jump-started.

Maybe if all the staff (Customer Support Team) moved nearly all talk on their talk pages to the forum, then discussion will continue there. Once they get in the habit, then more people will feel free to participate.

I have never felt fully free to participate on staff talk pages on any wiki farm, or on Wikipedia. Not even on Jimbo's (Jimmy Wales) talk page on Wikipedia. --Timeshifter (talk) 14:01, 11 September 2013 (UTC)

I'm more than happy with people using the forum instead of my talk page. :-)
While posting on my talk page guarantees a relatively swift reply, it's not all good since this is a user talk page, meaning that I get a "You have new message(s)" banner and as you mention, this being my talk page might discourage some people from contributing. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 19:18, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

Scribunto[edit source]

Can you enable Scribunto extension and the ParserFunctions extension for my wiki, please? I've read that these extensions are necessary for the Infobox: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Infobox and It's something I really need --JPoncet (talk) 16 September 2013

ParserFunctions is already enabled by default on all ShoutWiki wikis. As for Scribunto, I'm not sure how well the current version plays with our MediaWiki version (1.21.2 (r)), but I can tell you that you most definitely do not need Scribunto for a basic infobox template.
The English Wikipedia, where I assume you're planning on copying templates from, is — ironically enough — one of the worst possible examples of things you can do with templates. They've somehow managed to overcomplicate even the most basic templates.
Please contact the Customer Support Team via the contact form with further details about your wiki and what kind of an infobox you'd like and we'll be able to help you out. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 19:18, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

User:Usik64[edit source]

Congratulations.

I am an administrator of http://uk.wikis.shoutwiki.com/wiki/...

I Can help in editing the Ukrainian. If such assistance is needed can write directly on the mail usik64@mail.ua.

Thank you. Success. --Usik64 (talk) 09:21, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi Usik64, that's great! :-) While any and all help in building the Ukrainian-language ShoutWiki community is very much appreciated, I'd still have to ask you to refrain from edits like this one — unfortunately I don't speak nor read Ukrainian or any other Cyrillic language, so translating the messages people have left to me from English to Ukrainian doesn't exactly help me in understanding the messages. Thanks! --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 19:18, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

Would like to offer some Monaco skin gadgets to ShoutWiki[edit source]

I've been tinkering with the Monaco skin for awhile now, trying to make several popular Gadgets work on it, and I finally managed to port the popular "UTC Clock" gadget to the Monaco skin. I'm still testing it for bugs and seeing if I can port several other gadgets to Monaco that used to only work on skins based on Monobook/Vector, but if I can scratch together something usable, I was wondering if you guys might be interested.

For now, you can (if you register an account there first) test out some of my "Monaco skin theme toggle" gadgets on my Orain based MediaWiki Testers Wiki. I basically made gadgets that let users switch to different skin themes of Monaco instead of the default "Sapphire" theme, and while most are direct CSS style sheet ports, I had to modify some of them because I couldn't make certain features work (like that custom graphic that shows up behind the wiki logo with the Gaming theme), and some of them had problems where the interface colors were hard to see, so some of the gadget ports of the skin themes aren't exact, but I did manage to port over most of the basic color schema changes more or less intact. They still need some improvements, so if you'd like to port them to ShoutWiki and improve on my work, please, feel free.

I also have my own custom port of the Monaco skin on Github, which I have to admit was inspired by the version used on ShoutWiki (I have to say, I was impressed how display error free your version of Monaco is when used with the WikiEditor extension), so I made my own version of Monaco that also works well with WikiEditor, as well as reverting the buttons and bulletpoints to the style used by the Vector skin.

If you want to contribute to my port of Monaco, I'd be honored, and while I have no plans to move my wiki here on ShoutWiki to Orain (I'm still quite pleased with the service of ShoutWiki), if you or anyone else would like to help me with my Orain based wiki, again, I'd be honored. Arcane (talk) 22:13, 16 September 2013 (UTC)Arcane

It's great to see that you've taken an interest in gadgets! I wonder what happened to Gadgets 3.0...it was on the Wikimedia Foundation's roadmap at one point but it seems that it's been silently dropped from the roadmap since that.
Skin developing is quite an art, but once you've mastered it, it can be pretty fun. :-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 19:18, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I agree, skin and gadget development can be fun :-). However, I tried porting my UTC Clock Monaco port to my personal monaco.js page here, and it doesn't seem to work, but it works fine on Orain and my test wiki, but I assume that's due to the modifications done to ShoutWiki's Monaco fork, so if you'd like to port anything from my wiki, you'll have to modify it to work here. I've currently managed to port the UTC Clock and Sandbox gadgets to Monaco, and since I can't seem to do anything with the user bar, I've had to place portlet links on the toolbar to make them work. Arcane (talk) 21:24, 19 September 2013 (UTC)Arcane
Yes, some IDs and class names between our Monaco and the original are a bit different. This can cause issues with certain JavaScript snippets that expect the presence of elements with these IDs/classes. --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 18:47, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

New Namespace[edit source]

Just a request - could you please add a "Blocks" namespace, an "Items" namespace, and a "Misc" namespace for MCPE Wiki at htt[://en.mcpe.shoutwiki.com en.mcpe.shoutwiki.com]? I have a total of one contributor, plus I did a custom skin of Monaco. Thanks! Gerbilman (talk) 00:43, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi there! I've added the requested namespaces to the MCPE Wiki (internal namespace IDs range from 150 to 155). The local customizations to Monaco look spiffy. :-) --Jack Phoenix ShoutWiki Staff (contact) 18:47, 25 September 2013 (UTC)

Can you make me an admin on the hub wiki?[edit source]

I see things I can fix or improve on various pages, but they are protected. For example; on the forum and help pages. I leave messages on the associated talk pages sometimes, but they don't usually get replied to. And it is easier to just fix the problem, rather than to discuss and adjust things multiple times long distance over several days or weeks on the relevant talk pages. --Timeshifter (talk) 20:26, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

Changing name of an wiki[edit source]

Could you please change the name of my wiki (42.shoutwiki.com) from "DeepThought" to "ডিপথট"? The later is a Bengali name, I hope you can see the name properly and can copy-paste it where required.
